Kae, I don't know of any actual name changes. However, the Yelton surname is frequently misinterpreted by transcribers, etc. as Yetlon or Yetton, I have also seen instances in the original censuses where the census taker spelled it Yelten or Yeltin. I think Yeldon is perfectly possible, but Yeldell may be a bit of a stretch. There is a Robert Yelton in the 1810 Census for Newberry District, SC. It shows him as 26-45, but I suspect him to be at the lower end of that range, as his wife is 16-26 and they have one child under 10. We don't really know exactly who this Robert Yelton is or how he connects to the rest of the family. In any case, I think he is too young to be your Robert. With that single exception, I know of no Yeltons in SC until very late in the 19th century, when some of the Rutherford County branch of the family moved to SC. I am looking for a Robert YELDELL married to Phoebe COSPER. They were in Abbeville SC in the 1700's. Thanks, Kae
Hi, Add "Yeton" to the possible spellings of Yelton. John Basil Yelton's name was spelled "Yeton" in some of the Civil War records.
