Cousins, In wandering through the 1880 Census, I found David Yelton, b. ca. 1811 in NC and living in Fulton County, IN in 1880. The census states that both of his parents were born in NC as well. The only other person in the household is his wife Mary, b. ca. 1822 in PA. I think this may be the same David Yelton who married Eliza Henry in Shelby County, IN on 17 Nov 1831 and was living in Fulton County in 1850 with his new wife, Malinda Lear, whom he married on 5 Mar 1850. There were two children by the first marriage, Mary E. (b. ca. 1832) and Robert (b. ca. 1834). I don't know if Mary is a third wife, or Malinda's middle name, or what. In any case, who is this guy? The 1850 Census gives his place of birth as Vermont, or at least that's what I though it said when I looked at it. If anyone has easy access to the census and can check this, I would appreciate it. My office moved, and I'm not two blocks from the National Archives any more. If he & his parents were really born in NC, he can't be a descendant of Charles. That leaves William & James as possible grandfathers. Because of the Shelby County, IN connection, I'm wondering if he could possibly be a son of Robert Yelton, Sr. by a wife before Catherine Castator. Robert was 38 when he & Catherine married, certainly old enough to have been married previously. And there's that Robert Yelton/Elizabeth Kersey couple from Iredell Co, NC that seems to vanish from the face of the earth. There's a Robert Yelton in the 1820 Census for Pendleton Co, KY, age 26-45. Robert Yelton, Sr. would have been 35 in 1820, so that fits. I don't have anyone else in my database who even comes close. The census shows an adult female, also 26-45. This can't be Catherine, as they did not marry until 1823. The household also includes 1 male 10-16, 3 females under 10, and 2 males under 10. David (the orginial subject of this increasingly verbose message) would have been 9 in 1820, so that fits. Of course, that leaves the problem of identifying the other children of this first marriage, not to mention identifying Robert's wife with some degree to certainty. Can any of Robert & Catherine's descendants (or anyone else for that matter) shed any light on this? Cheryl
