    3. Hi, Add "Yeton" to the possible spellings of Yelton. John Basil Yelton's name was spelled "Yeton" in some of the Civil War records. 1. [YELTON] David Yelton
    2. Cheryl Chasin
    3. Cousins, In wandering through the 1880 Census, I found David Yelton, b. ca. 1811 in NC and living in Fulton County, IN in 1880. The census states that both of his parents were born in NC as well. The only other person in the household is his wife Mary, b. ca. 1822 in PA. I think this may be the same David Yelton who married Eliza Henry in Shelby County, IN on 17 Nov 1831 and was living in Fulton County in 1850 with his new wife, Malinda Lear, whom he married on 5 Mar 1850. There were two children by the first marriage, Mary E. (b. ca. 1832) and Robert (b. ca. 1834). I don't know if Mary is a third wife, or Malinda's middle name, or what. In any case, who is this guy? The 1850 Census gives his place of birth as Vermont, or at least that's what I though it said when I looked at it. If anyone has easy access to the census and can check this, I would appreciate it. My office moved, and I'm not two blocks from the National Archives any more. If he & his parents were really born in NC, he can't be a descendant of Charles. That leaves William & James as possible grandfathers. Because of the Shelby County, IN connection, I'm wondering if he could possibly be a son of Robert Yelton, Sr. by a wife before Catherine Castator. Robert was 38 when he & Catherine married, certainly old enough to have been married previously. And there's that Robert Yelton/Elizabeth Kersey couple from Iredell Co, NC that seems to vanish from the face of the earth. There's a Robert Yelton in the 1820 Census for Pendleton Co, KY, age 26-45. Robert Yelton, Sr. would have been 35 in 1820, so that fits. I don't have anyone else in my database who even comes close. The census shows an adult female, also 26-45. This can't be Catherine, as they did not marry until 1823. The household also includes 1 male 10-16, 3 females under 10, and 2 males under 10. David (the orginial subject of this increasingly verbose message) would have been 9 in 1820, so that fits. Of course, that leaves the problem of identifying the other children of this first marriage, not to mention identifying Robert's wife with some degree to certainty. Can any of Robert & Catherine's descendants (or anyone else for that matter) shed any light on this? Cheryl

    3. Kae, I don't know of any actual name changes. However, the Yelton surname is frequently misinterpreted by transcribers, etc. as Yetlon or Yetton, I have also seen instances in the original censuses where the census taker spelled it Yelten or Yeltin. I think Yeldon is perfectly possible, but Yeldell may be a bit of a stretch. There is a Robert Yelton in the 1810 Census for Newberry District, SC. It shows him as 26-45, but I suspect him to be at the lower end of that range, as his wife is 16-26 and they have one child under 10. We don't really know exactly who this Robert Yelton is or how he connects to the rest of the family. In any case, I think he is too young to be your Robert. 3. Hi everyone, This is a new search engine by GenCircles that searches of Ancestry/Rootsweb message boards plus GenForums. Genealogy Message Searcher: http://images.gencircles.com/message/searcher They also have a "Global Tree" at http://www.gencircles.com/globaltree/ These both came from other lists that Kathy L. and I are on. I used the first URL and typed in Yelton and got 343 messages from Ancestry and GenForums message boards. The messages were from 1998 through 2001. Have fun! Iris

    1. [YELTON] Benjamin Yelton
    2. Cheryl Chasin
    3. Cousins, In the 1880 Census for Vernon County, MO is the following family: Benjamine Yelton age 40, b. IN, parents both b. VA Martha Yelton age 26, b. IL William Yelton age 7, b. MO Etha Yelton age 5, b. MO (this is a girl) I think this must be Benjamin F. Yelton, brother of Oliver Perry Yelton and son of William Yelton & Mary Lockwood. According to the Vernon County GenWeb site, B.F. Yelton is mentioned on p. 298 of a history of Vernon County. I e-mailed a lookup request, and learned that he was mentioned as being a Federal soldier from Kansas who was wounded in a battle with bushwhackers at the Riggs house. This item also says that he was, at the time of the writing, a citizen of Nevada (presumably Nevada, MO, which is in Vernon County). Does anyone have any further information on this family? Cheryl

    1. [YELTON] Another Yelton Mystery
    2. Cheryl Chasin
    3. Cousins, In the 1880 Census for Morgan County, MO, on p. 230C, we find Hugh Smily, age 66, with his wife Martha (56) and daughter Minnie (15). Also in the household is a grandaughter, Myrtle YELTON, age 9. The census states that she was born in Missouri, that her father was born in Ireland (!) and her mother was born in Missouri. I checked the census at ancestry.com, and it really does say Ireland. Interestingly, Martha Smiley's father is also stated to have been born in Ireland. Maybe the census taker just made a mistake. But even if he did, who was Myrtle's father???? Cheryl

    1. [YELTON] Thomas Jefferson Yelton
    2. Cheryl Chasin
    3. Cousins, In the 1910 Census for Madison County, NC Thomas J. Yelton stated that he had been married four times. At that time, he was married to Sarah Rejettie Howell. The 1900 Census shows him with a wife named Cornelia. I just found him the 1880 Census for Cocke County, TN, married to a Rachel Clemons and the two of them living with her mother. Does anyone know who the fourth wife was? Did he have children by anyone other than Sarah? Cheryl

As Mary J. was b. in 1847-8 Jefferson must have died when she was a very young child Does anyone out there recognize any of the people here? Thanks very much, Iris, and everyone. Roslyn

    1. [YELTON] Yelton, Hagaman
    2. Cheryl Chasin
    3. Cousins, I have another mystery for you. I've been going through the 1880 Census (LDS transcription) and I found a Mary Yelton in Columbia County, Washington Territory. She's 74 years old, a widow, and the census states that she was born in North Carolina and both her parents were born in South Carolina. The LDS transcription shows her as in the same household with M.G. Hagaman. I looked at the actual census on ancestry.com, and discovered that they actually in separate households, although immediately adjacent in the census. (This is the one flaw I've discovered in the LDS transcription. It doesn't give dwelling or family numbers, and sometimes it shows people as in the same household when they are not, or in separate households when they are actually in the same one.) M. G. Hagaman is male, age 40, and married, although he's alone in the census. He's also shown as born in NC. I have the 1850 NC census on CD, so I looked at that, and the only Hagamans or Hagermans I found were in Watauga County, NC. That's really interesting, because there was a Yelton family in Watauga County. And it has a Mary of the right age, Mary Ellen Ford who married Barnet Yelton. She moved with most of her children back to NC about 1847 when her husband died in Tennessee. The last record I have of her in NC is the 1870 Census for Watauga County. But if this is her, what on earth was she doing in Washington Territory, living in a household by herself? I can account for most of her children, and there is no connection with the Hagaman/Hagerman family that I know of. There's one daughter Susan A., who was born ca. 1836 and that I have nothing on. There's also an older daughter whose name I don't even know, but she was probably too old to have married a man born in 1840. Any thoughts??? Cheryl

    3. Hi Everyone, Lest you think I've gone bonkers (or more so than usual) I'd better explain. I am also the Administrator for the Yelton Message Board at Rootsweb/Ancestry/MyFamily. It seems that messages that are posted to that board are also posted to our Yelton e-mail list. Confused yet? It's called gatewaying and if there are objections, I can ask the staff to turn it off. I don't expect it to be too much of a problem, as I've been doing this as a volunteer for well over a year and the board has been pretty quiet. Recently there have been many changes in the boards due to merging boards from all three of the entities above. The kinks will get ironed out eventually, I hope. In case you would like to visit the message board here is the URL : < http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/board/an/surnames.yelton/25/next > Meanwhile, if there is a bit of extra traffic on the list - it could just be the boost we need to get researching again - right???
