Hi Everyone, This is just a reminder that our list is a "public forum". That just means that the archive of our messages is open to anyone who wishes to search through it. We need to be careful of the information about living people that we include in messages to the list. I usually send dates and places for living people "off-list" to the person who needs the information for their files. When sending to the list, I remove the dates and places leaving only the names. The archives are available at: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/YELTON/ and http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl?list=YELTON An example: When you use the search engine "Google" and type in your own name - you often find a URL to a message in the archives that you wrote to the list. That can be "good" and "bad". Good because it also helps us in our research for our ancestors and Bad because it can feel like an invasion of our privacy. Of course, with the Yelton surname, it's not "so" bad. There There just aren't that many people who would search that name unless there was some relationship they were looking for. These two paragraphs are in the welcome message each subscriber receives. Let me know if you think I should rephrase or update them in any way to make them clearer: "The purpose of this mailing list is to exchange genealogical information about the Yeltons, as well as related families (Tarvin, Garland, and Hinson are names that spring to mind, although there is a separate Garland mailing list). Please exercise good judgment in posting information about living people on this list, as messages will be archived on RootsWeb." "7.Copyrights. Any person sending a message to this list or to a list member retains the copyright to it. By sending the message, you grant to the list custodian, and to his heirs and assigns forever, permission to distribute copies of the message to other list members, **to store archival copies of the message, and to make the archival copies available to the Internet community at large.** You also grant to other list members the right to quote your message in part or in total as a part of their replies sent back to the list. List members must ask permission of the author of such messages to use or publish copyrighted material they have received through contacts on this list." It is always a surprise when I do a search using Google or Ancestry or Genealogy.com and my own name turns up. I Googled for my friend's married surname the other day for her and up popped her own name (married surname) as part of a couple of obits of her siblings. She was very surprised! Hope you are all having a great Fall, Iris

Working on P.C. Cem. records I saw Lydia Yelton (1818 - 1906) w/o Robert Yelton and Robert Yelton (1815 - 1902). Both are buried at Smith Cem. The records show the directions to Smith Cem. as located on Rt. 467, Portland, about 3 miles W. of Three Forks of Grassy Creek on US 17. The only reason I mention this is - if you are looking for burial sites, the Smith Cem. might not be looked at. Hope this might help someone. Beth
Hi Beth, My hubby says that photography really began (studio type) about 1839. It became popular quickly - by roughly 1845) So, I think Sarah Yelton who married Dudley Dunaway would be too old by 1845. She was born in 1816 and if 10 or 12 that might be too early for studio photos. Sarah Margaret Yelton who married Francis Marion Gosney (b. 1833) would be a good fit though. There are a couple more Sarah Yeltons, in Pendleton Co., KY that might fit the time frame. If Pendleton Co., is not too far away from Newport. My geography of KY is really bad. <G> They are: Sarah Agnes Yelton m. Francis Marion Houston in 1856 Sarah Minerva Yelton b. 1865 m. Edward Fryman Sarah M. Yelton b. 1853 m. Charles Hiteman Sarah J. Yelton b. 1858 m. James A. Hoffman Hope someone can help identify the right Sarah! We jumped from summer right into winter here in PA. Hope you are all having a nice autumn. Iris
About a year ago I was given a small group of photos, but since they weren't my direct line I really didn't try to I.D. them. Today I found one pic. of a pretty young girl about 10-12 with her hair parted in the middle of her head and long curls hanging down all around. She might be a light red head, but the photo is a b/w. She is standing beside a table (studio pose) & wearing high top black shoes. Also has on a ruffled long-sleeve dress. On the back of the photo in pencil is written what I read as Sarah Yelton. The photo was taken by T or F A. Remington in Newport. I don't know if this is the Sarah Yelton who married Dudley Dunaway or the one that married Francis Marion Gosney. Can anyone help? Beth Shields
I saw this poem, posted without attribution, on another mailing list. They managed to trace it back about four degrees of separation before the trail went cold, so they presented it as "author unknown." If anyone knows the author, or has seen it elsewhere, please do let me know. I'm sure some of you will relate to the sentiments...... BAD APPLES (author unknown) If you greet my passion with hoots, "I don't want to seek my roots! I'd rather the past be left unmined, for I might not like what I might find," that's your choice, I leave you to it; though that is not the way I view it. But if you've an itch to know and share and make an effort to find what's there, you may indeed turn up a stone and find what you'd rather leave alone. Perhaps you find that old cold trail ends at the door of the county jail. Or maybe you've rich or royal kin among whom others might not fit in: those whose presence you'd like to bury, who cheated at cards or forgot to marry. We love to show off saints and winners, but what to do with losers and sinners? Do we leave bad apples on the tree, hanging up there for all to see; or pluck them off and deny we know the tree on which they chanced to grow? Here are my thoughts about what to do with relatives not as nice as you. I believe we should tell the truth if they were criminal or uncouth. >From this distance we cannot judge since we never took that one-mile trudge in shoes that pinched or had no soles, since we never had to play the roles, that made them do just what they did or forced them into that moral skid. Nor do we know whose shining star was just the result of good P.R.; whose exemplary public lives hid the fact they beat their wives. Wealth and rank provide no surety of one's real piety or purity. Embrace the outcasts, faults and all, for the good they did despite their fall; and remember that this motley crew supplied the genes that made you, you. Just write down all the facts you find and let the future make up its mind; and hope we have no need to fear events that occurred in a bygone year will somehow reflect on us from afar and make us other than we are. But if the truth still turns you pale, don't just make up a better tale, or fudge the dates or change a name or otherwise assign the blame. If you cannot determine to be frank, please just leave the spaces blank. Better to leave the facts a mystery than attempt to alter history. Yet truth remains; it may still be found, though deeply buried underground; and when it is, you know that means someone like me will spill the beans. Author Unknown

Hi Bob and Louise-I am not a Yelton, but my gggrandmother Sarah/Susan Eldridge married Jefferson Yelton sometime before 1848 when their daughter Mary J. . was born. Susan's guardian was John Wright after the death of her parents and she married Allen Wright(in 1852) after Jefferson died. I have not been able to find a marriage certificate for Susan and Jefferson-the only way I know they were married was it said she was his widow on her marriage cert to Allen. I have never been able to find out anything about Jeff-and whether or not they had other children. If you know anything about him or where he was from I would appreciate hearing from you. Thanks, Roslyn
