The BERRY, ALEXANDER and DILLON projects are open to any one of those surnames (or variations). We do run into the problem of a few people signing up for a DNA test and then when we ask for their lineage, they are slow or in some cases, non-responsive. This is not a huge percentage, but it is the down side of having an OPEN project. In my experience, it is mostly people who do a DNA test through the GENOGRAPHIC project who are the ones who don't respond to requests for their lineage information. As a group, they mostly seem fairly uninterested in 'genealogy'. In all cases, when -- of "IF" -- unresponsive people have a match, they will generally correspond with a matching person and will usually upgrade their testing levels. I did an unscientific survey of FTDNA projects once -- quite a long time ago -- and it seemed pretty evenly split between open projects or projects where the administrators monitor the JOINing process.
