    1. Re: [Y-DNA-projects] Y-DNA-PROJECTS general fund strategies
    2. Ralph Taylor
    3. Val asked "Wondering how other administrators decide how such {General} funds are used?" Our Taylor project uses the General Fund to subsidize Y-STR tests for people who qualify. Typically, we'll pay half of a 37-marker test. They must have a pedigree (tying into the Taylor surname) back to 1850 at latest and the test must meet a project-wide goal, rather than benefiting just the individual. We don't require a pedigree for project membership, so here it assures us that the person isn't substituting DNA for traditional research. 1850 was picked as it's the first census to list names of all family members. We're starting a new initiative: To subsidize all the cost of tests for Taylor attendees at the London "Who Do You Think You Are?" conference in February. We'll pay for 37 markers, requiring the Taylor surname & a pedigree back to 1851. We're now raising the money to pay for the tests from member donations. (BTW, FTDNA has a glitch with online donations, which IT is now working to resolve.) This initiative will help to address a serious lack of British project members and hopefully start to break the cycle of "no members, no matches". Optimistically, we'll be able to extend it further than this one event. -ralpht_/)
