This was down > in southern Virginia in the area known as Isle of Wight, which has been > broken off into Isle of Wight, Southampton, and Nansemond counties. Since > then, of course, that land has been divided and divided as the family grew." “Alexander Spotswood was born in the <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_Tangier> Colony of Tangier, <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morocco> Morocco, <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Africa> Africa, about 1676 to Catharine (née Maxwell, c. 1638 - December 1709) and her second husband, Dr Robert Spottiswoode (17 September 1637 - 1680), the Chirurgeon ( <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surgeon> surgeon) to the Tangier Garrison. Through his father, Alexander was a grandson of Judge <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Spottiswoode> Robert Spottiswoode (1596–1646), a great-grandson of Archbishop <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Spottiswoode> John Spottiswoode (1565–1639), and a descendant of King <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_II_of_Scotland> Robert II of Scotland through the 2nd Earls of Crawford <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Spotswood#cite_note-Lee-0> [1]. Alexander's older half-brother (by his mother's first marriage to <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Elliott_(surgeon)> George Elliott) was <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_Elliott> Roger Elliott (c. 1655 - 15 May 1714), who became one of the first <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Governor_of_Gibraltar> Governors of Gibraltar. Following the death of Robert Spotswood, his mother married thirdly, Reverend Dr. George Mercer, the Garrison's Schoolmaster.” So it’s likely that he was haplogroup A1. The original Spiveys were from Yorkshire & arrived in the colony of Virginia about 1640. Most of the Spiveys tested at FTDNA, about 10 of us, are A1 & all have the fairly unusual allele of 9 at DYS 391. This includes me although my branch of the family remained in Yorkshire.
