    3. The neglect of history widespread; kids barely know who Elvis was, and don't even have the general outline of what it might be that they don't know anything about of real historical significance. "Ancient history [meaning anything that happened pre-Beatles] just isn't very useful in modern times," as one of my daughters explained when she was still in high school. Even historians wouldn't likely know much about genetic genealogy, I'd suppose. I can think of two 19th century governors that were almost certainly I1, though, one from the far north and one from the south. Their Y-DNA haplogroups can be inferred from testing of living descendants. I'll be interested to hear about the fellow you're thinking of. 3. I wondered too. Ken, did you actually attend a school where they made you learn the names of the colonial governors of Massachsuetts? Of course there are one or two that a school child should recognize. It's a very relevant question. If you've got a thousand year old group of people of which you've managed to collect eight members who are related from before 1600, and one of them was a colonial governor of Massachusetts, or of any colony, then what you've more than likely got is descendants of a family that was prominent in Norman times and remained so. Or, if this family was Dutch, it gets even more interesting. So the governor's identity could not be more relevant. Inquiring minds are burning to know. Who are the other surnames? And their emigrant ancestry, if they all came to the colonial U.S.? PLEASE don't make us wait until U.S. school children are well educated! Inquiring minds want to know this century! I'm curious whether the younger generation knows any early American colonial history? My grandchildren in school are probably told more about which hollywood celeb visited a OWS ghetto last month than how and why their country was started. - - - - Kenneth Nordtvedt See "Tree for I1" and "Tree and Map for haplogroup I" at http://knordtvedt.home.bresnan.net showing my working tree for YDNA haplogroup I.
