I'm pleased to convey news that the researcher responsible for the DF series of Y-SNPs has been able to confirm the Z131 variant (downstream of I-M253 and parallel to DF29); he tested DF29- samples for Z131 and found both ancestral and derived results (Z131- and Z131+). With the lack of derived Z131 results from FTDNA, I was starting to get concerned that this could be a spurious variant. (Just to be clear, in case it wasn't apparent from my earlier postings: until a derived result is found with conventional Sanger sequencing, all the Z-SNPs are "candidate" variants and could be false positives due to next-gen sequencing errors; we make efforts to exclude the more dubious variants, but our screening isn't perfect. I try to keep track of the confirmed variants on the summary page of our collaborative spreadsheet at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Agq_ez43qXCjdFlxemtlUnZ1Qk01cVhMRVBFcm5WX3c&authkey=CIOag_UD&hl=en_US#gid=26). Luckily Z131 has now been borne out to be a genuine SNP thanks to the work of the aforementioned researcher. Happy holidays, Greg
Do we know anything about this confirmed Z131+ Geographical area of male line ancestry? Any STRs? Ethnicity of surname or database ethnicity identification? Birthday? -----Original Message----- From: G.
