    3. Hi Cuz Jayne and other Cuzzes, Do you have more info about Jonathan Humphrey Jr's line than what is available through Becky's family tree on rootsweb? Also, do you know of a James Humphrey born around 1731? I am trying to prove that my conclusion about Jonathan Humphrey Jr being our ancestor is correct, but I have reached a dead-end. My story starts last week, when my Uncle Gerry sent me scans of old documents that he got from his cousin. I will put these online so you can see. Here you go: http://amyhumphries.com/Humphries/History/ The author of the documents says that we are descended from Daniel Humphrey and Hannah Wynne through one of their sons, but it is unknown which one. She guessed Thomas only because she had a lot of relatives named Thomas. So I started to try to put the pieces together from these documents and spending every waking minute researching online. I came up with the line that Becky mailed out to the group. I mailed it to my uncle, who mailed it to some of his other relatives, and he said he would ask me how I got that info. I then went back and wrote down how I came up with what I did, and my thought process. Afterwards, I didn't feel as confident as I'd like in my conclusion that Jonathan Humphrey Jr was our ancestor, because of the mystery man named James and the other Ann, but I don't see any alternatives. This is my very long response to my uncle, and the others that he emailed: ____________________________________________________________________ OK, I guess I have to show how I got this info. I hope you can follow it. You'll see that my findings aren't conclusive under #9. But if we really are descendents of Daniel and Hannah Humphrey, and not some other Humphrey family, I think my conclusion is correct. This is a great resource, and we'll start here with Daniel Humphrey: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=ttg13&id=I02598 If you click on the "Pedigree" link you can see all his ancestors. Some can be traced back even earlier than 1450. Some of Hannah's relatives can also be traced back that far too, if you click on her or one of the kids and go to their Pedigree. Go back to the page for Daniel given in the link above, and click on Jonathan Sr. Then click on Jonathan Jr. and you'll see he was married to an "Ann", but his line ends there. I was working upwards from me, and when I was looking for a Humphrey married to Ann Moore I found him. So I'll now try to work up from me to Jonathan Jr. 1. Thomas Humphries (b 1951) & Maria Collazzo Obviously I know my parents, though I put the wrong year for my Dad's birth. My mom was born in 1951, and my dad in 1950. I realized it after I sent the email. 2. Gerald Humphries (b 1920) & Winnifred Keller Grandpop and Grandmom 3. Charles Humphries & Margaret That's what it says in the family tree in my baby book 4. Raymond Humphries (b 1879) Uncle Gerry told me his name. Now we go to familysearch.org: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp This site is great for digging up old records. Search for Raymond Humphries, and you'll find one that lived in Philadelphia during the 1880 census. He was born in 1879. His father's name is Jacob, which is what it should be (see below). 5. Jacob Humphries (b 1847) I got his name from the "Revolutionary Ancestor" page of the notes. I got his birth year by clicking on his name from Raymond's census record where he was listed as "Head of Household". 6. Daniel Humphreys/Humphries (b 1802) & Eliza Weikel I got their names and birth year from the "Revolutionary Ancestor" page of the notes. I confirmed them through familysearch.org. In the search, "Daniel" for first name, "Humphreys" for last name, "Birth/Christening" for event, "+ or - 2 years" for year range and "1801" for year. You'll fiind him in the 1880 census as well as "Daniel Humphries" (note the "ies"). He was born 1802, not 1801. Go back to the search page, and put in Eliza Weikel for the name, and change the year range to "+ or -5 years". She was born in 1806. Her husband's name is misspelled as "Danile Rush Humphrey". 7. Thomas Humphreys (b 1779) & Elizabeth Erwin/Rush Same as Daniel, I got the info from the "Revolutionary Ancestor" notes and confirmed on familysearch. I put in his name and +/- 2 years and 1779. He's the first match, born in Philadelphia, on the exact day listed in the notes, but his death date is off 5 years (and 10 days). It lists his wife as Elizabeth Erwin, and his parents as James Humphreys and Mary Ann Gilyard. I clicked on Elizabeth Erwin to make sure she was the same person as Elizabeth Rush. The birthdate listed was 6 days off from what's listed in the notes, and the death date is exact. Seems to be the same person. 8. James Humphreys (b ~1757) & Mary Ann Gilyard I clicked on the links to the parents from Thomas Humphreys and got these people. Also, James Humphreys is listed as Thomas's father in the "Revolutionary Ancestor" notes. 9. Jonathan Humphreys Jr. (b 1735) & Ann Moore This is where the problems start, and things differ from the notes, which list a James Humphreys born 1731 married to Ann Powell Moore as Thomas' parents. But the James I found as Thomas' father was born in 1757, and the mother's name was wrong. I thought maybe there was a James Sr and James Jr, but I couldn't find a James Humphreys born here or England around 1731 that would fit. So I searched for "Ann Powell" and "Ann Moore" being married to a Humphreys. And unfortunately I found both :(. I have to admit everything could go wrong here. Ann Powell married a James Humphreys (which could be our James Sr) on Sep 3, 1759. Ann Moore married a Jonathan Humphreys on Oct 13, 1758. Both were married at the same church in Philadelphia. I couldn't find anything else about James or Jonathan from this site. So I went back to the rootsweb site (url listed near the top of this email). I matched Jonathan to the Jonathan Jr who was married to "Ann". But there was no sign of this other James anywhere in the family tree. The following is my thought process as to why I picked Jonathan over James... James was born "Abt 1757". The two couples in question got married in 1758 and 1759. Jonathan and Ann Moore were the earlier couple. Also, Moore was the last name listed in our notes. Powell was her middle name, possible her mother's maiden name. So then I thought of it in this perspective... What if we aren't descendents of Jonathan Sr? Could we be Thomas's descendents? How about one of Daniel's other sons? Well, if this the info in this family tree on rootsweb is correct, this is what I get... Brother #1 - Samuel: listed as never married Brother #2 - Thomas: listed as died before 1717 probably as a minor Brother #3 - Jonathan: had 5 sons, including Jonathan Jr (and 5 daughters), 2 sons died as infants, including a Jacob born in 1731 that I thought could have been our mystery James until I saw he died at 28 days old. Brother #4 - Benjamin: had 1 daughter Brother #5 - Solomon: had 5 sons (and 2 daughters), 2 died as children, no decedents named James, oldest child was born in 1739 Brother #6 - Joshua: oldest child was born 1744, no descendents named James Brother #7 - Edward: listed as never married Brother #8 - Charles: listed as never married So my conclusion is that if we really are descended from Daniel & Hannah, then it must be through the Jonathans. So who is the mystery James that is married to Ann Powell? He could be a descendent of Daniel's brother Benjamin. They had 6 children, and there isn't very good info on them. I've only found names of three of them, daughters Elizabeth and Ann, and son Owen. There is also a Lydia listed as their daughter but the birth year given for her is before her parents were born. Owen had a daughter named Mary. And that's all we know about this line (except Mary's descendents, who aren't Humphries'). I will continue to research what I can. I would love to know for sure if I'm right, but I fear we may never know for sure. I found it interesting that since the late 1600's we've always lived pretty close to Philadelphia. No wonder I moved back here after college. :) ___________________________________________________________________________ At 10:54 AM 5/19/2005, jayne Hyslop wrote: >Welcome Cousin Amy ! > >Here's our Humphrey line: > >Daniel Humphrey b.1660 = Hannah Wynne >Benjamin Humphrey b.1701 = Esther Warner >Hannah Humphrey b.1729 = Abraham Tunis >Anthony Tunis b.1757 = Mary Thomas >Rees Tunis b.1788 = Sarah Binkley >William Tunis b.1816 = Martha Filman >Jacob Tunis b.1848 = Theresa Carey >Alma Tunis b.1888 = David Hyslop >John Hyslop b.1920 = Ruth Harris >John Hyslop b.1954 = Jayne Best >David Hyslop b.1988 > >I have a big Humphrey database, including some details of your line.
