OH, MY! What a shock to read this. Another Angel has arrived in Heaven with the name of "VI". Oh, how she will be missed by all. Vi was born on Aug. 19, 1932 in White City on the Iron Range. She graduated from Buhl High School in 1950 and later that year married James Grooms. A son, John was born in 1956, and a daughter, Diane, adopted in 1968. Vi graduated from UMD in 1965 and began a teaching career in Grand Rapids which spanned 30 years. This included earning a Master's Degree from Bemidji State university. In 1979 her first husband, Jim, died and in 1987 she married David Alban. Throughout her life Vi was an active participant in the life of the community. As a teacher she served as the President of both her Teachers Union, and of the Iron Range Conference for the Minnesota Federation of Teachers, [MET]. She developed the mentoring program for the Grand Rapids School district. For 30 years Vi was involved with the Democratic Farmer Labor Party serving as the secretary, Associate Chair and Chair for the Itasca County DFL. She started the Progressive Caucus in Itasca County and was the originator and editor of its newsletter, Common Sense II, which she edited until two months before her death. She was an active member of the Unitarian Fellowship for 49 years, holding the position of president and most other offices. Vi is survived by her husband, David, her son John, her daughter Diane, one grandchild, and three great grandchildren. As Vi requested, there will be no memorial service or funeral. Memorials are preferred to the Grand Rapids Food Shelf or Advocates for Family Peace. {Note: there was a great picture of Vi smiling in the Obituary] ........
