As most of you know, during the bus trip in Philly we visited the Betsy Ross house. You may not know the connection between Betsy and our Wynne family, however. In conversation with the "Betsy" on duty at the house, some of us learned that Betsy Ross's great grandfather was (can't remember first name) Griscom who was a carpenter. He immigrated on the ship Welcome with William Penn and, of course, our Dr Thomas Wynne. Further, I learned from Elaine Peden later at the Wynnestay reception that William Penn commissioned Mr Griscom to make bricks for building homes in Philadelphia because, having lived through the London fire, he wanted to minimize the dangers of wooden homes. That may well mean that Betsy's great grandfather built the home of Dr Wynne, which was the first brick home in Philly - or at least made the bricks used to build the house. Small world as they say!! For those of us in the PANJ/DE/MD area, I see that the Winterthur Museum in DE is having an exhibit about Betsy Ross from now until Jan 2, 2011. We may want to visit. JoanII
Dear Cuz's, To add to Cuz Joan II's bit of history on Betsy Ross and the ship Welcome.... you have to take into perspective that yes there were Indians, Swedes and a few others here when William Penn arrived..but the "Welsh" community started with 23 ships with approximately 100 people on each ship...but it has been found that there were a lot less people on those ships then they thought. So for a number.. there were 2300 people brought here then a handful of Swedes and Indians.... That is just a medium size conference in today's business standards on people counts. That is why we keep finding more and more connections to the original settlers. Hugs Cuz B... looking at her Betsy Ross Bobble head..LOL ttg-inc@tx.rr.com http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ttg13/ "'Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass.
