Cuz's I agree! Most people did not read or spell. The census takers came from all backgrounds and were of different nationalities. Spelling differ. take for instance the marriage certificate of Nimrod and first wife Nimrod Wynn was also spelled Winn guess she or the cenus taker wanted to get it right. Nimrod cound not read or wright. In leanna's marriage certificate it was just Wynn. Later it was Winn and she was unable to read or wright. Oh in 1860 she married Theodore Ice in Henry county,. Mechanicburg Indiana just above their names on the cenus was a Louia Latchchaw ,I believe that to be her sister it shows clearly she was 18. same age as leanna 's sister would have been in 1860 and James Winn 's name is spelled Win . Jimmie Bill Hey there diana, Hey Becky. I may get back on the trail again on ole Nimrod. ----- Original Message ---- From: "ttg-inc@tx.rr.com" <ttg-inc@tx.rr.com> To: wynne-genealogy-society@rootsweb.com Sent: Sun, November 14, 2010 11:05:07 PM Subject: Re: [WGS] Mary Paterson Dufton Dear Cuz Diana, Totally agree on the census takers. Try as they might lots of times they were dealing with people who could not write or spell, or with foreign accents, they had a problem understanding, or were just in a hurry and jotted down what "they" thought was the spelling. I get a big chuckle about some genealogy people who take the hard stand on the "But on the census they spelled it like this" so it must be.... Yeah right.. ha ha For myself I just wanted to see if there was something out there in a document that would be more powerful than a census.
