"Shuffling John" John Dickinson went from Talbot Co, MD to Kent Co, DELAWARE. His son, William Dickinson came down to Kent Co., MD-why, we`ll never know, but he died in Broadneck, Kent Co., MD, between Chestertown & Rock Hall, Kent Co., MD. Williams` son, Philemon (the first of several with this name). left DE and bought 140 acres on Shippen (sic) Creek, Kent Co., MD . Shippen Creek empties into the Chester River. Philemon`s brothers and several children came with him. My grandfather, Philemon was born at that location on Shippen Creek. Interesting, the nickname, "Shuffling John" was listed by the better know, John Dickinson, signer, Pres of PA & DE. A short-short description of my ancestors. Depends on which map you look at! Find CHESTERTOWN, Kent Co., MD, Rock Hall is 12 miles due south; if you miss it you are in the Chesapeake Bay, opposite Annapolis-13 miles by way the crow flies. Note in Colonial and Revolutionary Families of PA by John W. Jordan Pg 284 .. According to the original terms between the passengers and the master of the "Submission," they were to have been transported to the "Delaware river, or elseware in Pennsylvania, to the best conveniency of freighters." But through fraud on the master's part, as it is claimed, or perhaps on account of a severe storm which they are known to have encountered, they sailed up Chesapeake bay, arrived in the Patuxent river, on 8 mo. [October] 30, 1682, and disembarked at Choptank, Maryland, on 9mo. 2, and James Harrison and Phineas Pemberton proceeded thence to Bucks county, Pennsylvania, as detailed above, in the account of Phineas Pemberton. Dear Cuz Ida, You asked: When did the Wynne girls arrive? Well here is the ships dates..and a bit of extra. The Lyon arrived after 11 weeks on 13 Aug. 1682 carrying Dr. Edward Jones, his wife Mary Wynne Jones [Dr. Thomas Wynne's Daughter] and their children: Jonathan Jones & Martha Jones. The Welcome, Robert Greenway, Master, from London, arrived 28 October 1682. Dr. Thomas Wynne, 2nd wife Elizabeth Croyley Rawden Maude Wynne of Rainhill and son Jonathan Wynne. Submisson from the port of Liverpoole the 5 dy 7mo 1682, [Sept 5th, 1682] arriving at Choptank, Maryland 9 mo, 2, 1682;[Nov. 2nd, 1682] it carried Dr. Thomas Wynne's Daughter: Rebecka Winn 20 years old, and his Step Daughters: Jane Mode 15 years old, Marjory Mode 11 1/2 years old. They came on the Submission with Ellis & Jane Jones and family. A year later 2nd daughter Tabitha and hubby Roger Hughes, threw the girls on the ship Morning Star, with out forwarning and to the great surprise of Dr. Thomas Wynne... Morning Star which sailed from Liverpool in Sept. 1683 arrving in Philadelphia on 14 Nov. 1683. carrying Dr. Thomas Wynne's step daughter Elizabeth Rowden and two daughters Sidney Wynne and Hannah Wynne. Interesting note in Colonial and Revolutionary Familes of PA by John W. Jordan page 278 it says: ...[Phineas Pemberton]...when with his wife and three children, and his father, Ralph Pemberton, he embarked for Pennsylvania, in the ship Submission," from Liverpool, 7mo. 5, and arrived at Choptank, Maryland, 9mo. 2, 1682, thus making the voyage in fifty-eight days from port to port. A more extended account of this voyage appears later. After landing, Phineas Pemberton and his Fatheri-in-law, James Harrison, left their families at the house of WILLIAM DICKINSON, at Choptank, and proceeded by land to their original destination, the "Ffalls of the Delaware," in Bucks county, Pennsylvania. Penn had arrived in his province October 24, and Pemberton and Harrison had hoped to find him at New Castle, but when they arrived there, Penn had gone to New York. When they arrived at the present site of Philadelphia, they could not pro- Pg 279 cure accomodations for their horses, so "spancelled" them and turned them into the woods; the next morning they sought for them in vain, they having wandered so far into the woods that one of them was not found until the following January; after two days searching the men were obligated to proceed up the river in a boat. An uncle of Pemberton's wife, William yardley, had arrived a few weeks before, and had taken up lad at the Falls, where he commenced to build a house. They stopped at Yardley's and Pemberton concluded to settle in the vicinity. In the spring of 1683, Harrison and Pemberton brought their families and household goods from Maryland to Bucks county, Harrison stopping on the way south at the Upland, now Chester, to attend the first Assembly of the Province of Pennsylvania, to which he had been elected. Remember the Julian Calendar issue: http://www.adamsonancestry.com/calendar/ >From 1582 until 1752 the calendar worked as follows 1st Month = March 2nd Month = April 3rd Month = May 4th Month = June 5th Month = July 6th Month = Aug 7th Month = Sept 8th Month = Oct 9th Month = Nov 10th Month = Dec 11th Month = Jan 12th Month = Feb So if it says 5 dy 7mo 1682 that means the date would have been September 5th, 1682. Dear Cuz Becky: Did both Rebecca and Sydney come on the same ship? Am I correct in thinking they came on the "Submission" that landed at Choptank in 1682. If so, my Richard Ratcliff was also a passenger on that ship. As most of you know, during the bus trip in Philly we visited the Betsy Ross house. You may not know the connection between Betsy and our Wynne family, however. In conversation with the "Betsy" on duty at the house, some of us learned that Betsy Ross's great grandfather was (can't remember first name) Griscom who was a carpenter. He immigrated on the ship Welcome with William Penn and, of course, our Dr Thomas Wynne. Further, I learned from Elaine Peden later at the Wynnestay reception that William Penn commissioned Mr Griscom to make bricks for building homes in Philadelphia because, having lived through the London fire, he wanted to minimize the dangers of wooden homes. That may well mean that Betsy's great grandfather built the home of Dr Wynne, which was the first brick home in Philly - or at least made the bricks used to build the house. Small world as they say!! For those of us in the PANJ/DE/MD area, I see that the Winterthur Museum in DE is having an exhibit about Betsy Ross from now until Jan 2, 2011. We may want to visit. JoanII
Dear Cuz's, For those of you who didn't know, or didn't get to come to the 11th Reunion in Philly, or who didn't get a copy..... =) The Wynnestay Guys, gave me the Wynnestay papers back a few years ago, with the promise to digitize them for them. Which I gave to them this year at the reunion. They also want to sell them to help support the up keep of the Wynnestay. I created two CD's. ~ One is a PowerPoint of the Wynnestay photo's with history of ownership incorporated into the pictures. ~ One is a CD of PDF's, of all the documents i.e. letters, newspaper articles, real estate brochures, utility bills, heater upgrades, fence upgrades etc.. all the papers the owners put in the box. If you wish to own a copy of one or both of the CD's, the cost is the same as they used when we visited. Photo PowerPoint CD = $10.00 Document PDF CD = $15.00 Both = $25.00 Should you wish a copy of one or both, send me a check putting "Wynnestay CD" in the memo. Becky Thill - WGS 1907 Baylor Drive Richardson, TX 75081-5413 I in turn will send you the CD's, and forward the funds to the Wynnestay. To All: We have lived in the DC area for 35+ years. We don't like the traffic situation, but we have learned to adapt to it and to deal with it-----sometimes with much moaning and groaning. Know it can be a terrible ordeal for those visiting in these areas. There are alternative modes of moving around in the areas involved and hopefully we will be able to incorporate some of them in to our travel plans. All of the sites Joan mentioned would be wonderful places to explore. While I don't connect directly to "the girls", I have always followed their story with great interest. I think it will be interesting to see what we might "dig up" on them. Take care. Dear Cuz's, To add to Cuz Joan II's bit of history on Betsy Ross and the ship Welcome.... you have to take into perspective that yes there were Indians, Swedes and a few others here when William Penn arrived..but the "Welsh" community started with 23 ships with approximately 100 people on each ship...but it has been found that there were a lot less people on those ships then they thought. So for a number.. there were 2300 people brought here then a handful of Swedes and Indians.... That is just a medium size conference in today's business standards on people counts. That is why we keep finding more and more connections to the original settlers. Hugs Cuz B... looking at her Betsy Ross Bobble head..LOL ttg-inc@tx.rr.com http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ttg13/ "'Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass. The draw is that a number of us come down from the two daughters of Dr Thomas Wynne who settled in MD - Rebecca and Sydney. One of the best places to find records of early MD is the Hall of Records in Annapolis. The MD Historical Society in Baltimore nd the National Archives and DAR library in DC are also good resources as would be the Anne Arundel and Baltimore Historical Societies. These are all located relatively close to Annapolis. As Becky said - it's time to look at the girls!
