    1. [WGS] FTM Find and Replace - how to search
    2. Dear Cuz's, In working though Footnote, I started using the Find in my FamilyTree Maker program... thought I would share how cool this tool is!! If you are trying to find for example, as I was, if someone was in that place that you have in your database.. you can use the FIND AND REPLACE, to find that place if you have entered that name in your information. Example.. I was looking for Cumberland, any one that had Cumberland in the information... How: Click EDIT [in row where FILE EDIT VIEW PERSON TOOLS HELP is] Look down Menu and Choose: FIND AND REPLACE [or use CTRL F.. i.e. hold down CTRL button, then hit F] Window opens Type in the FIND box the word your looking for Be sure the check mark is in the "Find whole words only" Click FIND It will search your database for the first one it finds with that word in the information. If that person is good, and you want to look for another person, Click FIND NEXT and it will go to the next place where that word is. ..... IF you want to stop the search, at the bottom of the window where the scrolling green boxes are moving showing that it is searching, there is the word "Stop" click that and the search stops and you can then close the box or change the word or start the "Find" again. Once it finds the person that has that word in their information, you can click the "Go To" button and it will take you to that person. You can then "Close" the window, or replace the word, if you were truly using it to change the spelling or change the word... To replace the word with another, you type in the word you want to replace it with in the "Replace with:" box. I think this is a great tool!!! Hi, Ida, Yes, that information is nicely presented and fits with my understanding of the words. It is also my understanding that you could not own property on your own without a guardian until age 21, when you reach your majority --- another amusing term. Very best regards, Jane

    2. Ida Lee B. Cann
    3. To All: I found the following info on line and I think it will help to answer some of our questions. You may want to check the Chester County site for further information. Cuz Ida These definitions were listed on the Chester <http://dsf.chesco.org/archives/cwp/view.asp?a=3&Q=610739> County [PA] Archives website Types of tax records: 1. return - a list of persons with taxable property without an assigned value listed 2. assessment - a list of persons with taxable property which includes the assigned values, also may include the amount of various types of property (land, including types of land; cattle, sheep, horses, etc.) 3. rates - a list of persons with the amount of tax assigned to that individual Types of individuals listed in tax records: 1. landholder - someone who holds land by deed or lease 2. inmate - a married or widowed, landless individual who may own taxable property (like a horse) 3. freeman - single, free man at least 21 years of age 4. nonresident landowner - the owner of unoccupied land I find this list particularly helpful. I've always wondered at the definition of "inmate" and how old a man had to be before he was officially "of age" and therefore could be listed in tax records. Can I also assume he couldn't own property on his own (without a guardian) until he was 21? If you know, please leave a comment.

    2. Ida Lee B. Cann
    3. Dear Cuz Becky: I referred back to some info my cousin, Bill Vance, had shared with me. According to Bill, the definitions would be the following: Freeman Male of legal age with the right to vote, own land and practice a trade. Inmate One who dwells with another or others in the same house. For example: We find William Vance on the tax rolls for E. Nantmeal as a "freeman" in 1771. He appears as an "inmate" on the 1774 tax rolls for E. Nantmeal implying he was married sometime between 1771 and 1774. Hope this helps. Hugs, Cuz Ida

    1. Re: [WGS] Submission and fairy tales-PATUXENT RIVER
    2. Hi, Becky and all cousins-in-law, I lived in Southern MD for 21 years -- the very foot of MD. It is where I met my Wynne X-husband. Southern MD is bordered on the South by the Potomac R and on the East by the Patuxent, both of which flow into the Chesapeake. The big water is the Chesapeake Bay. It is so huge you cannot see across it at some places. The Patuxent is NOT a large river. Sounds like the ship came into the Chesapeake, stopped along the Patuxent R, probably around Solomons Island, which is a very trendy sailing area (and which is not truly an island). Solomons is right at the mouth of the Patuxent R into the Chesapeake Bay. Then they likely slipped back into the Chesapeake Bay and went on north. They would have passed Annapolis on the left (west) before coming to Rock Hall on the right (east). This area is home to the finest blue crabs and crab cakes and oysters anywhere! Yum! There is a huge Navy base named Patuxent River Naval Air Test Center (called Pax River) where the Navy trains all of its test pilots and many who go on to be astronauts, where your Wynne cousin Chris Shaw, a retired USAF colonel, was a professor and director of the Florida Institute of Technology. We were in St. Mary's County, MD on the west side of the Patuxent R. As an interesting aside, in Maryland, when you ask where someone lives, they always tell you what county they live in. This anomaly I found no where else I ever lived. Every Marylander knows ever county's name and what is there --what it is famous for, its cities, colleges, whether it is a rich or poor county, what the education system is like there, crime level, etc. That Eastern Shore is very quaint. I think it is Kent Island that has made some claim to being where Maryland's first settlers arrived. However, the folks where I lived, went to college, and where my Wynne X-husband was a professor (St. Mary's College of Maryland, St. Mary's City) would argue strongly that it is there where those early settlers first came. Annapolis is such a lovely town. It is going to be a wonderful place for a reunion. The Eastern Shore amongst other things is where Assateague State Park and the wild ponies are -- not far from Virginia's more famous Chincoteague ponies. Both are on the ocean. At the end of MD (on that Eastern Shore) is a bridge that is about 26 miles long, which connects MD to VA at the Virginia Beach/Norfolk area. Quite a drive! I love keeping up with you all by reading what you are doing! Apparently the man just did not know the difference between the Patux and the Choptank. We`ll never know.
