    1. Re: [WGS] Sir John and Dr. Tom
    2. Judy Winn
    3. Connie, This may be the first time I've seen the connection made between the Virginia Wynnes and the Pennsylvania Wynnes. Thanks so much for this information. Judy Winn >>> GramereC@aol.com 03/12/05 1:40 PM >>> "Lord Mayor Robert (Mayor of Canterbury) Wynne born 1593 in Canterbury, England and died Sept 1609 in St. Georges, Canterbury, Was not the son of Sir John Wynne and Sidney Gerrard. On September 4th 1609 when Thomas Wynne was 17 Robert Wynne his father died, two days later his mother Francis Watmer Wynne died. They were buried together on the 8th of September at St. Georges Church. Three weeks later it was confirmed as plague. William Watmer removed the six orphans who were named Thomas, Peter, John, Elizabeth and Anne Wynne. Sara Effield the orphan daughter of Christopher Effield brewer was also among the children in residence. Watmer himself was also mayor of Canterbury 1608-1609 and again in 1629. Many of the merchants contributed clothing for the children. Peter and John were sent to board with Rowland Dixon the Tailor. Watmer took Elizabeth and Ann Wynne as well as Sara Effield into his home. On July 14, 1612 Thomas Wynne took over the charge of his sisters. Elizabeth Wynne married Paul Maye a vintner, at St. Andrews Parish on May 18, 1616. Nothing is known of Anne. Mr. Daniel Marsh took Thomas as a grocer's apprentice. John and Peter attended King's School while Roger Ravens was headmaster. An additional article reprinted from Arcaeologia Cantiana CII (1985) sheds further light on things. Watmer was not from Canterbury but rather from Shropshire. Watmer was a farmer's son. Descendants of his nephews and wards settled in the American colonies. In an application for arms, William Watmer applied for the arms of a distant kinsman Francis Watmough of Lancashire. Watmer was claiming to descend from William Watmere and Margaret daughter of Thomas Sparkes of Scotedon Salop, and ultimately from John Watmough of Eccleston Lancashire. In 1590 because of familial ties to Wynne Watmer set for Canterbury and legal training. Robert Wynne's family also is reported to have originated in Shropshire. In Robert Wynne's will Frances Wynne his wife is defined as William Watmer's sister. Watmer's third marriage was to Mary daughter if Giles Masters. She had five sisters. One of her sisters Elizabeth married Herbert Randolph; another sister Deborah married Edmund Randolph. Mary Masters Watmer had a son Giles Watmer, and two daughter Mary and Dorothy. Dorothy died young. Giles Watmer was first cousin to Thomas Wynne Grocer in London. Giles Watmer married his cousin Mary the daughter of Herbert and Elizabeth Randolph in 1652. Edward Randolph the son of Edmund and Deborah Masters Randolph was instrumental in the formation of development of Massachusetts as a colony but died in Virginia. The Wynne's Thomas, Peter and John sons of Robert Mayor of Canterbury were first cousins to Giles Watmer. Giles Watmer was a shared cousin between the Randolph and the Wynne's. Thomas Wynne became a grocer. Peter Wynn became a notary. John Wynne became a musician. Peter the notary is reported to be the father of Robert who had a will in America and is Speaker of the house of Burgess for twelve years. Robert Wynne of Jordan's Parrish Charles City in Virginia: Robert Wynne has a will dated July 10, 1675 proved August 15, 1678. The will is in the Virginia Colonies, and his estate is in England and Virginia. In England: To his eldest son Thomas Wynne the farm in Whitestaple Parish in Kent near Canterbury, named Linebett Banckes. To his son Joshua Wynne, he leaves the house and Oat Mill on Dover Lane, St. Georges Parrish Canterbury. In Virginia: His estate to his sons Thomas and Joshua. To Joshua the Plantation called George's. To his Grandson George Woodleif he leaves a foal. (More of George Woodleif later) The residual estate is left to his wife Mary Wynne. Also named in the will is a son in law Frances Poythres. Thomas Wynne son of Robert was living in Prince George County 1707; his age was about 50 then. This Thomas Wynne had a wife Agnes and a son Robert Wynne, and a daughter Mary Melone as seen in Deed of transfer 1707. Joshua Wynne son of Robert Wynne with his wife deeded a transfer in 1708. This transfer was for land in Surry. Joshua Wynne was also justice for Prince George County in 1708. Sir John Wynne was born 1523 in Wales, Llarwst Carnarvonshire (near), Gwydir House Eifiondo.. Sidney Gerrard was born in 1534. Place unknown. Her mother and father were William Gerrard and Dorothy Barton both born in 1509 in Ireland." Sir John Wynne was cousin to Dr. Thomas Wynne via the daughter of Robin named Angarrett who married Ithel Vychan. Ithel Vychan was Dr. Thomas Wynne's GGGG Grandfather. Robin, Angarrett's father was brother to Robert (alive 1304) Sir John's Great Grandfather. So Sir John Wynne's GG Grandfather and Dr. Thomas Wynne's GGGGG Grandfather were in fact the same persons. I think that makes them 3rd cousins twice removed to each other. Unless of course Dr. Thomas Wynne's mother was a cousin to her husband which was common in the family. 3. Star and Banner [Gettysburg, Pennsylvania] November 29, 1850 Shooting and Subsequent Death The following singular incident is re- lated in the St. Louis Intelligencer of the 11th instant: A few hours previous to the arrival of the steamer Amazonia, on Saturday, Mich- ael Wynn, of Pittsburg, Pa., died on board from the effect of pistol shots received at the hands of one Dr. R. Crane, a citizen of Grand Gulf, Miss. The circumstances attending this melancholy affair are thus briefly related to us by Capt. McBride: On the upward trip of the Amazonia from New Orleans, while the boat was ly- ing to at a wood yard for the night, be- tween island 36 and 37, on the night of Monday, the 4th inst., the deceased Mich- ael Wynn, and Dr. Crane, both cabin passen- gers, quarrelled, at a game of cards, and were on the point of coming to blows, when the Captain stepped in and preven- ted a difficulty. Wynn left the cabin and went below, and was soon followed by Crane, who says he designed going on the Duroc, which boat was lying alongside.- On the lower deck the parties again quar- relled, Wynn using some abusive language, whereupon Crane drew a revolver and fi- red four shots, all of which are supposed to have taken effect. The officers, crew, and passengers, alarmed by the firing, ran to the spot, and found Crane and Wynn standing within five feet of each other the latter smoking a cigar. The captain again interfered, and told the parties they must cease fighting and go to their rooms, or both go ashore. Crane first left the deck and soon retired for the night. Wynn re- mainded up until a very late hour conver- sing and smoking in the Social Hall, and to the repeated inquiries of Captain Mc- Bride and others as to his injuries, stoutly denied that he was hurt, although two bul- let holes were plainly visible in his clothes. On the following morning, [Tuesday] Wynn did not get up as usual, and, in the course of the forenoon, Capt. McBride and several others called in his state-room, and insisted upon his wounds being dressed, but he obstinately refused, and would not even suffer his clothes to be taken off. He re- mained in this condition regularly receiv- ing his meals from the cabin table until Saturday morning, when he arose, was shaved by the barber of the boat, put on some clean clothes and again retired. - Soon after he sent for the captain and made some inquiries regarding hospital ar- rangements in this city, and expressed a desire to be sent to the best regulated, as soon as the boat reached port. An hour or so later, and but a few moments before the boat touched at the landing, some gen- tleman in the cabin called in his roam and found him in the last agonies of death. Yesterday morning the Coroner of our city was called upon by Capt. McBride, and held an inquest, at which the above facts, in substance, were elicited, and a ver- dict was returned that Michael Wynn, the deceased, came to his death from the effect of pistol shots, fired by the hands of one Dr. R. Crane. Upon stripping Wynn's body, it was discovered that not less than four pistol balls had taken effect, all in the region of the hips and groin, and producing frightful wounds. His coolness at the time of the recounter and subsequent conduct, can a- lone be accounted for from the fact that he was partially intoxicated, and remained in that condition nearly up to the time of his death. He was destitute of means, the captain having but a short time previous to the difficulty loaned him a small sum of money. Dr. Crane, we are informed, was on his way to Louisville, Ky., to attend the med- ical lectures this winter, and when the Amazonia, reached Cairo he got off and proceeded up the Ohio, and is, up to the present time, no doubt unconscious of the fate of his victim. ----- Original Message ----- From: "The Thill Group Inc" <ttg-inc@comcast.net> To: <WYNNE-GENEALOGY-SOCIETY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, March 14, 2005 1:55 AM Subject: [WGS] Fatal Gambling Affray > Adams Sentinel [Gettysburg, Pennsylvania] > November 25, 1850 > Fatal Gambling Affray - In a difficulty > about a game of cards, on board the steam- > er Amazonia, in a recent passage to St. > Louis, on the 13th, from New Orleans, Mi- > chael Wynne, a citizen of Pittsburg, was > shot by a Dr. Crane, and died there from.- > Although four balls had entered his legs > and groin, Wynne persisted that he was not > hurt, and refused to allow any examination > to be made.
