Dear Becky, My husband and I are very interested in this trip and will make a decision once you have more information on the cost. Dear Cuz Millie, and others Ok this is the plan. The third week of June 2006 is the target date. Exactly what day and for how many days may vary, according to a lot of things. Mayor Phillip has left for a long delayed vacation for 12 days so I can't talk to him until he returns to confirm the time frames I need to figure out before we set a exact date. After I speak to him I am going to be contacting a travel group to set up what we can to get a cheap flight cost to Manchester, England. Then it is recommended that we take a train to Caerwys, a 45 min trip. Then we have to talk about housing, as there are only so many places to stay, etc... So I am going to work up some questions and need everyone to answer it honestly. As to cost, .. Mayor Phillip said that it should cost us about what it cost me to stay at the hotel last year at the reunion which was around $1,000.00 But.... I would say that $2000.00 would be more like it. But I could be wrong.... That is what I want to find out... Ok.. I will send the questionnaire in a bit. Becky has suggested that we wait until we can find out more regarding plans being made by Caerwys. The city government of this small town (mayor) has indicated that they will want to help group. We are supposing that this would include transportation from airport in Manchester to Caerwys, a reception of some sort, and help with finding accomodations in and near Caerwys. I was confused by Connie's reference to Llangollen which is Denbigshire as a place where members of group might want to stay. Caerwys (in Flintshire) is 45 kms. from Llangollen. Becky indicated that the folks in Caerwys might give group some help in arranging transportation about Flintshire-Denbigshire. I don't think Llangollen will work for anyone who does not have a car. Wynnstay is a hotel (probably named for the residence of a family related to Dr. Thomas Wynne who built their Wynnstay built about time Dr. Wynne emigrated and Dr. Wynne's son Jonathan, of course, named his home, built about the same time-Wynnstay). Best Western has two hotels in named Wynnstay, one in Snowdonia and the other in Chester-neither accessible to Caerwys except by car or van. Re. air travel, we should have a lot of people traveling from different places in the US on different airlines. I will be flying from Atlanta, for example. Cuz Linda from Way Down in Dixie
OK Becky Now I know you are busy but here is a question or two. Are we going to try and arrange group travel say from Baltimore BWI to Manchester UK? Manchester to where ever? There is no answer right now because the airlines only go out about 330 days for reservations. We need to start seriously checking next month or by September. Do you want to handle checking group travel or are we to form little groups and make travel arrangements? Don't want to step on your toes. I am assuming you are making arrangements with Mold Town Council on the UK end but not positive. What is Mayor Phillips correct name title etc? There is a Hostel in Llangollen Denbigshire but I Don't know how many folks are up for that type of experience. It is usually less expensive. There is a Wynnstay in Wrexham and a Wynnstay in Machynlleth Powys, and a Wynstay Arms in Ruthin if anyone wants a Wynnstay tour. There are records in Denbigshire, Flintshire, Conwy, Wrexham and Ceredigion. I would have to add Shropeshire and the circular walk which includes Dr. Thomas house in Yeiks the fog to anything I wanted to do. That looks like a 10 day trip and some type of car rental no matter how it is sliced to me. Calm down I am not expecting all those to be answered today just wondering how to plan. Cuz Connie
Caerwys (Care Wiss) A few miles west of Holywell, the tiny settlement of Caerwys (Care Wiss) proudly proclaims itself as the smallest town in Britain, for it was restored to town status with its own mayor in 1974 after the period since 1886 as a mere Parish. Caerwys was granted its first borough status as early as 1290 by Edward I, having earlier received a charter from Henry III. The town also boasts of containing the oldest lived-in house in Wales, with parts of a 1480 dwelling remaining in an 1800 alteration. Cuz Connie
Becky Just count me in on going and out on planning. Cuz Connie
Dear Cuz Linda and other Cuz's, And yes I can vouch for her, we have been working on a project for the last month, Oh and the book arrived!! Ok back to Wales, Mayor Phillip said that we should travel in June because it was before the raising of rates because July is when school is out and the rates go up. He also recommended that we go into Manchester because it is cheaper and that is how he flies to the US several times a year and finds it easier and cheaper to fly from. He is also the one that recommended we take the train to Caerwys as it was the easiest way to travel with a semi large group, compared to all trying to drive, and or renting a bus. He made it sound like the train came to Caerwys many times a day and wasn't a problem. But that is just what he said, what do I know =) This is why we are discussing the ways and whys, but I want to talk to Phillip first so we can get some real facts to things he may have planned etc. As to the June and not May, sorry but many can't travel in May due to schools, colleges etcs, but the other reason was cost of flights. Re. travel to Caerwys, Wales from Manchester, please excuse my throwing in my two cents. My name is Linda Shabo. am interested in making trip and Becky, hopefully, will vouch for me. I am descended from Thomas Wynne through his daughter Sydney. Anyway, I have traveled by train in the U.K and also by car. Wales is not well served by trains. Train travel in Britain is good between major destinations- many trains on these major routes and no long waits for when there may be another tain on the route. Caerwys is not a major destination. It is possible to travel by train from Manchester to Holywell, but we don't know how often a train to Holywell will run. Holywell is 89 kms. from Manchester and 13 kilometers from Caerwys, a km.=.6 or 6/10 of a mile. Group would have to have car (road) transportation, especially if members need to be able to nearby towns including Denbigh Castle which is associated with our family (the Langfords and Thelwells) and do some research. I think group would do well to consult with folks at Caerwys to see what they suggest. Becky has mentioned wanted to ask Mayor Philip. Regarding airfare to Manchester. June is high season, so a typical fare from Atlanta to Manchester high season averages 399-499 pounds (multiply by 1.8) to get dollar figure. There is a surcharge (additional cost) for anyone wishing to travel on days other than Monday-Thursday. May travel would result in a cheaper, shoulder fare, not high season-nor low (winter). In short, May could well save group an average of $200.00 per ticket. However, it is my understanding that some members of the group can not travel in May? Re. road travel to Caerwys. I would want to travel by train to Chester which is connected to Manchester (several trains per day) and is 71 kms from Manchester and 39 kms. from Caerwys because it is possible to rent a car in Chester and going to Chester avoids having to drive a car out of Manchester which is very large and carries recommendations from both Michelin and Triple A not to drive on Motorway if you can avoid it. Our last trip to Wales and Ireland (we took car on ferry to Ireland), we took train from London to Cardiff, Wales where we were met for Enterprise Rental staff with car and, thus, avoided driving in a very populous area. It is bad enough that cars in U.K. (lest anyone ever forget) drive on the LEFT side of the road and that most car (those which don't cost big time) are manual shift, end result is driver sits on right side of car shifting with left hand while trying to remember to stay on left side of the road. Linda .
