Hello CuzConnie, Re your "direct female line" question, does this require that I could trace my lineage to Martha Buttall through a continuous line of females. With Martha being #1 and me being #11, my line consists of 9 direct females and 2 males. I'm new at this study, so wasn't sure exactly what you are looking for. Thanks for the clarification. In the Southern states, many courthouses were lost during and after the Civil War. In some cases the Yankees burned every building in a town. In others, during Reconstruction there was a big influx of Carpetbaggers and Freedmen who were Squatters. To keep the true landowner from claiming his property they burned the buildings to destroy the records. Deeds, birth & marriage records, and wills were lost. The Census records were backed up by copies in Washington DC. Indiana Burned Courthouses - The destruction of courthouses greatly affects genealogists in every way. No only are these historic structures torn from our lives, so are the records they housed: marriage, wills, probate, land records, and others. Once destroyed they are lost forever. Even if they have been placed on mircofilm, computers and film burn too. The most heartbreaking side of this is the fact that many of our courthouses are destroyed at the hands of arsonist. However, not all records were lost. Twenty-eight of the ninety-two Indiana courthouses suffered courthouse fires, many of them rebuilt only to be destroyed again by fire or natural disaster. Below is a list of Indiana Counties and the years the Courthouses were subjected to a disaster. This does NOT mean that ALL RECORDS were lost. I just wanted to remind and let the other cuz's know that by book, you do not necessarily mean a long, many paged project..........a book can be as short as you want to make it.......10-15 pages for a nice little family project.? And FTM gives you the organization template, and prompts you on the format...........so just pick and choose what you want, fill in or import info and pictures, write whatever text you want, and voila....it is done, complete with foreward, title page, index, etc..? And already having all the images in the media section of each person?makes it that much?easier.? Maybe doing a book could be a good how to?lesson at the next reunion for those folks who haven't tried it. ???????????????? Then I took it another step... After I created the book with all the images I wanted, I took an Scanned in HIGH resolution the images, on to my hard drive. Then I took my handy dandy little bitty flash drive that fits in your pocket and saved those files to it. I then went to CVS and plugged that flash drive into their photo book machine and spent 30 minutes putting it in order on their machine... and had them make me a HARD BACK book of all the pages on Photopaper..... I took the hard back book to the family auction and it got 200.00 for our next reunion!!!! Now how was that for a great way to give a book to someone and it only cost me $14.99 for the 8x12 hard back book. I love the new technology.
