    1. [WW1-UK] Charles HART 34040
    2. Ruth Conner
    3. Hi, New to the list and trying to find more info on my Great Uncle Charles HART of Glasgow, Scotland, Royal Scots Regiment 2nd Battalion no 34040 died France 3.5.17 age 35. Tried CWGC and found a Charles Hart who might fit the bill but cannot confirm as no next of kin stated. Is there somewhere else to try and find this information? I would also like to find out what Division this Battalion belonged to so I can read up on their exploits. Thanking you for any info or advice. Ruth (NSW Australia)

    3. Hi Ruth Firstly are you sure this man is yours? There are several Charles HART who served in WW1 Do you have his medals or some other source to know this man is yours Soldiers Died does not help greatly unfortunately UK, Soldiers Died in the Great War, 1914-1919 about Charles Hart Name: Charles Hart Birth Place: Glasgow Death Date: 3 May 1917 Death Location: France & Flanders Enlistment Location: Glasgow Rank: Private Regiment: Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment) Battalion: 2nd Battalion Number: 34040 Type of Casualty: Killed in action Theatre of War: Western European Theatre See http://www.1914-1918.net/royalscots.htm Which says that the 2nd Battalion was part of the 8th Brigade 3rd Division It also says they landed at Boulogne 14th August 1914 This man (34040) was not with them as he did not get the 1914 or 1915 Star I have not found any surviving service record for this man You might also try the National Archives for the War Diaries, there are 10 hits for the Royal Scots , check the details listed to see if the 2nd Battalion is one of them , the diary can be downloaded for a small fee War Diaries rarely mention individuals but would tell you where they got to and the major events they were part of If this proves to be your man, another ploy is to check those with a service number close to your mans, they are likely to be in the same batch of men in the same unit, whilst your mans service docs may not survive, someones service record who joined up with him may and might add to your research Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Hi, > > New to the list and trying to find more info on my Great Uncle Charles HART of Glasgow, Scotland, > Royal Scots Regiment 2nd Battalion no 34040 died France 3.5.17 age 35. > Tried CWGC and found a Charles Hart who might fit the bill but cannot confirm as no next of kin > stated. 3. Hi List, I am looking for Terry of the “ Old Sweats “ group who is interested in WW1, he may also be ex Army and may live in Canada , and in 2003 he won on E Bay a British World War medal belonging to Sister J. LEYS who served in the Nyasaland Field Force. Sister Jane Reid Leys with husband Dr Norman Maclean Leys was living in Nyasaland from 1904 to 1917. Dr Leys is on a tree that was done in 1888 as is my sister in laws grandfather. Would dearly like a photo of the medal if possible, also believe there might be a 14 page letter as well. Many thanks and hope somebody knows who Terry is. Daphne New Zealand.

    2. Susan Allen
    3. Hello List, Please would anyone be able to assist me. On a birth certificate from Scotland in 1920 the father states the following JOHN CLARK - Iron Turner (Sergeant 508 Battery Royal Field Artillery ) John Clark and his wife married in 1916, so I am assuming he was a WW1 soldier. Can anyone enlighten me to this Battery/Regiment ? was it Scottish and where may I be able to find out a bit more about it, and John Clark ? Thank you Best Wishes Sue Allen Tacoma NSW Australia

    3. Hi Sue With a name like John CLARK you need to post a little more detail to see if we can help you The medal cards list 93 John CLARKs who served with the RFA and sadly rarely if ever list the battery to know which may be yours On the point of the battery, I cannot find a trace of a 508 Battery are you sure its 508 and not 208 perhaps ? Service records are searchable by name and sometimes by birth year and or place but not all details such as unit/battery If he served past 1921 his records would be at Glasgow and not open to the general public I assume you don't have his medals which would have his service number around the rim Have you tried for any children 1916 to 1920 other than the one you have in case there is more or differing detail What does his 1916 marriage registration show for occupation? Another avenue might be an absent voters list if you know where he should have been living in 1918, this may show his service number If you post his birth date and place plus wifes name and any known children (some records show the wife and children) Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Hello List, > Please would anyone be able to assist me. > > On a birth certificate from Scotland in 1920 the father states the following > > JOHN CLARK - Iron Turner > (Sergeant 508 Battery Royal Field Artillery ) > > John Clark and his wife married in 1916, so I am assuming he was a WW1 soldier. > > Can anyone enlighten me to this Battery/Regiment ? was it Scottish and where may I be able to find > out a bit more about it, and John Clark ? > > Thank you > Best Wishes > Sue Allen > Tacoma > NSW > Australia
