But many thanks to both for your interest and trouble. Ian

    2. Hello Doreen, Thanks for your reply. >Do you have access to Ancestry. They have military records. Yes - and I've looked for medal cards, service records etc without success - also trawled the London Gazette for information without finding anything relevant. However, in case it opens other avenues, or anyone can find records where I have failed, Alfred was born Lichfield, Staffs., 6th November 1876. son of Henry Burton (1840-1887) and Mary Ann nee Parker (1849-1919). I believe his training was undertaken in Birmingham - he is living with his widowed mother and other family members in Ladywood in 1901, as a gold jeweller, just a few streets from his future wife. By the time he married Gertrude Perkins in 1905 at St Stephen's, Worcester, he was resident in Stroud, Gloucs, where he lived the rest of his life - except, apparently for his war service. He had shops there in Gloucester Street and later at George Street. He died at Stroud, 26th September 1942. Best wishes, Ian

    1. [WW1-UK] Researching civilian workers - advice sought
    2. Dear all, I wonder if someone on list can kindly advise me on what is probably a terrible newbie question? My maternal grandfather Alfred Burton was - according to my own mother - called up during WW1. He was born in 1876, so rather old for combat, and I can find no evidence that he was ever involved in fighting. However, he was a jeweller and watchmaker by trade, so I speculate that he might have been drafted to work on military equipment, such as fuses or timers for munitions. Can anyone suggest sources or approaches by which I can research this? Many thanks, Ian

    3. Ian, Do you have access to Ancestry. They have military records. If not, if you can give some additional information, such as where he was born, where he lived, what was his wifes name - I will look to see if there is any information. I know for a fact that my grandfather was in the Black Watch during WW1, but I can't find any records. I have since discovered that he was in a reserve battalion, so did not actually go into the field of battle, and therefore did not get any medals. If he did get a medal there will be a medal card. 3. Thank you for this, Nirvard, and for all the important information you give to this list. Marj Hi folks I thought it worth mentioning that Findmypast have also made available the surviving WW1 service records (WO363 & WO364) the burnt and unburnt records Findmypast have done their own searchable indexing with more keywords than hitherto available, place of birth for example Ancestry, presumably in response to that have re-indexed theirs as well, picking up relatives, places etc So never before have we had so many avenues to search better than we were able to until now A keyword only search for say a village or surname picks up all the incidences (or at least all those transcribed correctly) which is a great step forward Findmypast do not have a keyword search in the database but do have service number, regiment, birth = town, County & Country Since Ancestry introduced their (pitiful) new search you can't do a wild card search on service numbers which is a great pity but now at least there is a better chance of finding people with relatives, birthplace etc So definitely worth searching again if you haven't for a while -- Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to WW1-UK-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message ----- No virus found in this message.
