As the early Pioneer moved westward, new teritories were opened to serve these settlers. Counties were re-established to provide reprensentation to the "local" inhabitants. In most cases those records were transfered to the new County Seats, but not always. Thus you will find William Brooks and Nellie Cook marriage records recorded in Giles County Virginia. In 1776, Fincastle County Virginia was abolished and the Counties of Kentucky, Washington and Montgomery were created out of the territory thereof. The Upper Guyandotte Valley was then in Montgomery county. In 1786, Wythe County was created and probably embraced a part of Wyoming County territory reaching as far North as the Guyan River. In 1800, Tazwell County was created out of Wythe and Russell counties. This new county included Wyoming County territory on the south side of Guyandotte River, In 1860, Giles County was created out of Montgomery County on the North side of the river, that part of the boundary line touching Wyoming County In 1824, Logan County was created out of Giles, Tazwell, Kanawha and Cabell Counties and included all the headwaters of Guyandotte River to Flat Top Mountain and the North side of Sandy River On the 26th day of January, 1850, the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Virginia passed an act, creating the County of Wyoming out of Logan County territory which embraced the entire upper Guyandotte.
