PLEASE FORWARD YOUR REPLY TO:::::::"Paul Redden" <redden@inna.net> Production has now started on the 1850 Census Free Schedule for Virginia with more to follow. These are available for Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Mac, and Unix. Windows readers are distributed on the CD while those for Mac and Unix platforms are available free of charge over the Internet. I use a high quality digital microfiche/microfilm scanner to scan the original microfilm directly at high resolution instead of reduced quality printouts. As a result, the printouts from these CDs are often better quality than printouts obtained directly from the microfilm using a standard microfilm printer. I digitally enhance the images and save them in a format that gives maximum quality for a given file size. Resolution is the greatest factor when deciphering digital images of old hand writing. The ability to zoom the image and make out the tiniest details of a letter can make all the difference in your interpretation. Common, low resolution, scans can miss thin lines and intersections or combine several lines into one. The image size on these CDs is chosen such that the maximum resolution is maintained while ensuring that an entire roll of microfilm will fit on one CD making it easy to use existing indexes created for the National Archives Microfilm series.
