Thank you so much for the information. I just found this information out this past week. As you mention, Hannah has 2 children after Edley Whitt death, that is were I am suck right now on this line, who was the father to Garrett Parsol Whitt, my gggrandfather. Garrett daughter Fallie Mae was my ggrandmother who married Joe Simpson. Did Hannah remarry? I do not any information at all, if anyone can help fill in the blanks that would be so great. But I would like to go where he was shot in Elk Lick too. Thank you so very much. :] Michelle Cox McGuire > From: [email protected]> Date: Tue, 18 Dec 2007 19:38:57 -0500> To: [email protected]> Subject: Re: [WVWYOMIN] The Old Swinging Bridge- Part 2> > Michelle and Stan,> From: G. Michelle and Stan, From: G. P. Goode Manuscript in Reference Book of Wyoming County History; Sometime in 1862/1863, John Lester and Edley Whitt, with their wives and children were traveling from the upper end of Wyoming County to some point in Kanawha County. On the road near the mouth of Toneyfork, they met Capt. Andrew Gunnoe and a squad of his home guards, who, knowing the men were Union sympathizers, took them prisoner and road away with them leaving their terrified women and children in the road to care for themselves. At the point just below the Sanders farm, Capt. Gunnoe, Charles S. Canterbury and Adoniram J. Lust continued on the road toward Elk Lick on horseback, the foot soldiers taking the prisoners over a path across the hill, a shorter way to Elk Lick. At the top of the hill the guards shot the prisoners and left them for dead, they continued on their way to join the officers at the Meeting house Branch where they all ate dinner. Soon after the shooting, passerby's found the prisoners. Lester was dead, Whitt, mortally wounded, was still living and had crawled to water. Lester was buried at the scene. Whitt was taken to Oceana where he was policed on a makeshift bed in the clerk's small brick office with the permission of James Cook, clerk. Here he lingered & suffered 20 days before death relieved him. During this time, his wife was permitted to be with him and helped take care of him. A religious woman, she not only cared for him physically but comforted him by singing and reading or quoting passages from the Bible. Other people were permitted to visit and talk with him, and he made statements about the shooting as he lay on his death bed. One of his visitors was Mattie, the wife of James cook, the clerk. His statements were not reduced to writing, but in 1865, when James Gunnoe was tried for his part in the affair, Whitt's statements were accepted as dying testimony with the result that Gunnoe was convicted. He was one of the men detailed to guard the prisoners. Edley Whitt's wife was Hannah Sarah Smith, d/o Isaiah Smith and Betsy Elizabeth Fletcher. I have Edley and Hannah as parents of 6 children. Plus 2 children born after Edley's death. I don't have but rumors as to the father of them. I would love to find connection of this family from that time on down to today. Alicia, Thanks! Joel, Are you any relation to Arnold and Jessie Hager of Oceana [in the 50's]? At that time they had been singing on the radio and were somewhat celebrities. I went to school with their son Bobby. We used to sing duets in Miss Byrd's music class. I guess you might say that Bobby was my first big crush. We were only in Kopperston until March 1953 and we moved to California. I would say that those years were so much fun. We lived at the head of the holler, just above the company store. I remember that was a time when Oceana put in a catfish pond and everyone in Kopperston would go down and catch enough to fill a wash tub. My wife Shirley read this and loved it. Here is her repsonse: "This is the same Christmas program given in 1974 under the coordination of Mrs. Duty, I was the tender age of 3 years and I uttered the now famous quote (famous in Matheny anyway), "mith Dudy-- gotta peeee!" and everyone roared with laughter. It was standing room only that night...as I recall...lucky for everybody that my mom took my hand and proceeded to take me to pee. In my defense, I had tried to get "mith dudy" to take me numerous times before we got on stage." Matthew STANLEY BROWNING <[email protected]> wrote: West Virginia Friends: There was a Christmas program every year at the Matheny Methodist Church where I went to church as a child and teen ager. A wire was stretched all the way across the church above railings at the altar. The curtains were bed-sheets with special hems that held the wire. The curtains were opened and closed by sliding them along the wire. We started practicing and getting ready for the Christmas program about six weeks before the event. Younger children recited Christmas poems and gave their rendition of Away In A Manger. There were usually a couple of plays, one of a secular nature and another retelling the original Christmas story. Teen-age girls donned homemade costumes and did pantomimes to the words and music of various Christmas carols. Everyone was given a chance to participate. One time, Elmer Arnold recited, Twas the Night Before Christmas, although he was not on the official program. Similarly, someone might sang a Christmas solo or tell of a Christmas experience. The church was always packed on the night of the Christmas program. Of course Santa was expected to arrive on time at the end of the program. He could be depended upon to deliver a small bag of candy, a peppermint cane, an apple and an orange to every child in the church building. Alicia, You are absolutely correct that you can not just take the work of others as correct without validating it for yourself and documenting it. No offense was taken. I just wanted to point out that I consider the database I have posted as a working database and not a published piece of work. Joel -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Alicia Sent: Sunday, December 16, 2007 3:00 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [WVWYOMIN] Sherry..on my Green line Sherry, Hello again. I'm not sure if I'm understanding right? Is this your family also? I am not actively researching William or Mary Catherine at this time. I have already did quite a bit on them. I have copies of census records and marriage records. I also have all the family pics of them, their families , including Martin Hill, some of his family and many others from Wyoming Co and surrounding areas. I may have read wrong but I thought you were asking me what I knew about them. Sorry if you thought I was needing help. Also, as for the website you sent me to. I didn't mean to offend anyone. I was just stating the obvious that I am very cautious to rely on a website or any other person for my research. I'm sure tons and tons of time went into it and I for one know how many years you can spend on genealogy and like I said, the records that someone else read may have had William as William Robert. My point was being that if I was the type of person to simply copy and consider it part of my research that I would have the same wrong information. Again I apologize to everyone that took offense.
