ATTENTION TO ALL MITCHELL CLAY DESCENDANTS AND HISTORIANS! Our Mercer County Historical Society received an update on the progress of our "Clay Memorial Project" Tuesday, April 28th. The current property owner has surveyed the area at the Mitchell and Phoebe Belcher Clay homesite and cemetery at Clover Bottom, outside Princeton WV. Mitchell and Phoebe Belcher Clay, were one of the earliest known families to settle in the Virginian frontier. Their children faced a massacre, burning, and a near scalping in the Shawneee Indian attack in the 1780-90 time period. He has agreed to designate .76 acreage for the cemetery at the original Clay homestead. Virtually nothing remains of the known grave markers nor names at this time. Assistance on anyone known to be buried here are most appreciated. Negotiations for additional acreage are ongoing. Attempts to set up a Clay Memorial Trust are being established now. Once the trust's details are finalized, an announcement is sure to follow ASAP. For future details or questions regarding this project you may contact us at P.O.B.5012 Princeton 24740 or contact me at >commander@inetone.net> mercerwvhistorical List Moderator WVMERCER List Owner & Moderator Glenn Belcher of Princeton WV

Is anyone working on this line? He is in the Mary Bowman book and the Rock Castle Baptist church book. Also he was in the last Raleigh County genealogy newsletter. He married Lucretia Walker, the daughter of William Walker Sr. I have a lot of information but hoping for a little more. Names I am researching in Wyoming County are--ELLISON--SCOTT--SPENCE--WALKER--and many more related by marriage. I belong to the Wyoming County Genealogy Society but haven`t seen much in their newsletters. Norma Straughan Russie

CATEACH SC wrote: The source for information on Wyoming County Bailey's is the Reference Book of Wyoming County History by Mary K. Bowman (1965) and reprinted by MCClain Publishing of Parsons, WV. The book can also be purchased through the Office of the County Clerk in Pineville, WV. Pages 358-367 deal totally with Bailey line. For example: "According to 1850 Census of Wyoming County, James Bailey son of Richard, Sr. was born in 1766 and would have been fourteen years old in 1780 and his brother John a little older. In those days a boy was considered a man by the time he was fourteen and did a man's work in the field, forest, or fighting Indians. Both sons were experienced woodsmen, scouts, hunters, and Indian fighters. Richard Bailey, Sr. through his son James Bailey, Sr. and the descendents of the marriages herein enumerated became the ancestor of the numerous Bailey families of Wyoming, Mercer, McDowell, and adjoining counties. Many of them have been worthy and useful citizens. John Bailey, the eldest son of Richard Sr. married Nancy Davidson.... James Bailey, Sr. married Margaret (Stinson) James Bailey, Jr. (born Rusell County, Va.-2/1/1806-2/7/1874) married Deliah Gore. > Theodore Freeling Bailey (1839-1926) married Martha Justice. Robert D. Bailey (1883-1961)--was the Judge in the Matewan Trials--Coal Mine Wars in the 1920's. Much additional information contained in the book. Worth having if this is your line. Cathy
SO YOU'VE DONE IT, YOU'VE SUBSCRIBED TO OUR WYOMING LIST WHY? WHAT DID YOU EXPECT IT TO BE? WHAT I'D LIKE IT TO BE? I'd like to take this opportunity to welcome each of you to our Wyoming County List. If you've not heard from me, I'd like to apologize. Time is so short and so many things to do. I'd also like to start a thread...a subject for discussion. We'll do this only for a day or so and then move on to another. You're on this list, OK now what would you like it to be? What did you expect it to be? Your thoughts are most appreciated. Of course, we'll cover genealogy and some history too, but I think we need to take a little time to acquaint ourselves to the beginning bunch and establish a network of thoughts and whatever you'd like to say about our WYOMING MAILING LIST I'll let go first. ------------------ I established this list to learn more about the county I've traveled over for years. I can get you to most of the towns but I never really learned the history of Wyoming County VA and West Virginee too. My ancestry ties into a little community located on Micajahs Ridge. There was and is a small community called "BEARTOWN" and that's where my Bailey, Godfrey, Peters, Shrewsbury, Lusk, and a White family were. I'm all ready for learn more on all these families and your family lines too. That's about it. WYOMING LIST OWNER AND MODERATOR GLENN BELCHER commander@inetone.net

It seems like we're all stuck at him going back; does anyone have anything further up on this line? Since I started this all after I started law school, I have not done any 1st-hand work (stole everything from my mom, Madam X, and a bunch of the rest of you! Thanks!), but I intend to get some serious work done this summer to return the favors. Parenthetical references are approximate amount of information I have about the wives' families, expressed as a college letter grade (habit). Howdy to All, I never lived in Wyoming Co. WV but sure have a bunch of ancestors from that neck of the woods. My John Shields married Elizabeth Colburn in Tazewell Co. VA in 1803. they moved to area of Guyandotte River and Big Fork which at the time was still the border between Giles and Tazewell Co. VA. My Shorts and Bishops arrived in Wyoming Co. shortly after it was formed from Logan Co. VA in 1850. My James and Mary Harris seem to show up about 1820 just before the area became Logan Co. VA. They were believed to be Native American and from NC. Thanks, Doug in Columbus, Ohio.

Richard WILLIAMSON remained in Wyoming County until his death in 1872; Mary Jane died between 1870 and 1872, predeceasing Richard. "Chatath" WILLIAMSON is an unknown, probably a cousin from Hugh WILLIAMSON's other grandchildren (Hugh went to PA, it is said, from Western VA in the late 1700s, and possibly had another family.) Isabel was the ninth child and sixth daughter of Richard WILLIAMSON and Mary Jane (WILEY) WILLIAMSON. Hope that helps some, and always looking to learn more! Thanks!
