    3. Hi: I'm new to the list. Just found out I have a new connection to Wyoming County. I am looking for information on the following family. James & Elizabeth GIBBONY ST. CLAIR, were married in Wythe Co. VA 1826. Both were b. ca 1795, James, possibly in Bedford Co. VA They were in Logan County Census 1840, 1850 & 1860 Wyoming Co. Census, and Elizabeth St. Clair was in the 1870 Census. Children: William, b. ca 1832, m. Mary ? Samuel P. b. ca 1834, m. Martha (possibly Cline, Martha d. Wyoming Co. 1900) I believe there is a connection with the GUNNOE or GANOE (Archibald) family of Wyoming Co. William went onto Mercer Co., then Monroe, disappearing after the Civil War (as far as I have found). Mary St. Clair is listed as head of household in 1870 Wyoming Co. Census. Their children: Louisa J. b. 1856 Mercer Co., m. Isaac GANOE Monroe Co. 1879 Malinda C., b. ca 1858 Wayman, b. ca 1859 Robert b. 1867 Monroe Co. WV, m. Martha Jane STICKLER Summers Co. WV If anyone has any information on these families I'd love to hear from you and will be happy to share what I have. I'm also have ties through my McGraw's to Wyoming Co. 1. [WVWYOMIN-L] 1890 Census Records
    2. Glenn Belcher
    3. We really do need the 1890 Census, however, this was burned in 1921. At the time, the census schedules were located in the basement of the Commerce Building in Washington, D. C. Even though the fire was contained, it flooded the area. The damage was not assessed until the following day, and it was noted that the census records soaked in the water overnight outside the protected vault area. The schedules were dried out, re-copied. But it was impossible to restore them. So? They should still be intact, yes? In 1932 Congress authorized certain documents to be destroyed, which included the original 1890 schedules. Then, in 1934, the remaining schedules were destroyed by the Department of Commerce. Some of the mid-western census records are still available. For example, the 1890 Illinois schedules were later found, and again in 1953, when some fragmented schedules were discovered. Family History Centers have microfilmed these fragmented schedules which consist mostly of mid-western states, and then, not all counties, or enumeration districts are in tact. Jeannette H. I know because I published a 500 page book (see below) and I am still gathering information. I will try to answer each of your question one at a time. But first let me guess. You are a descendant of JESSE^5 MCKINNEY and LUE ANNIE^6 SHREWSBURY. Do you live in West Virginia? I live in Kentucky which is a 12 hour drive one way for me when was researching the court records and cemeteries for the book. BALLARD P^5 SHREWSBURY was born July 1873 in Raleigh County, WV, died 12 October 1935 in Basin, Wyoming County, WV of Pneumonia and was buried in a Church Grave Yard on a ridge above Basin. REBECCA CAROLYN (BECKIE) MEADOWS was born 1878, died 1932 and was buried beside of Ballard. Alva Jackson Hylton was married 5 September 1888 in Raleigh County, WV to Beckie. SAMUEL PARIS^4 MCKINNEY was born 19 August 1866 in Wyoming County, WV. He was a Blacksmith. Both Sam and MARY (POLLY) ELIZABETH^6 GRAHAM are buried in Church Grove Church Cemetery (was called Rube Howerton Cemetery), but I didnt find a grave stone. Sams Mother is SOPHIA^4 HOWERTON. Sam and Polly are second cousins. Well I hope this helps you Tina and hope to hear from you soon. All the names, and in fact some of my own families, mentioned by Mr. Kennedy as being Melungeons HAVE NOT BEEN SUBSTANTIATED BY HIM, and while I would find it intriguing and interesting to have links to this very distinct group of people, NOTHING HE HAS WRITTEN has any validity. He has NOT researched any of these lines, and only makes suppositions. I have his book, sent to me by him, and I have written him telling him what I believe is his injustice to people who really want to know their family roots. When I first began my own research, I was made aware that there were clans of such Melungeons in the mountains around Beuna Vista, VA, some by the name of Collins. I would NOT find it offensive to be an offspring of them. What I DO find offensive is his complete disregard for real facts. Even when I pointed out to him that he had children belonging to people who did NOT belong, his only response was "well this is a work in progress". I also have other information that will DISPROVE his crazy theories about the MULLINS (I can't speak for Collins since I have never researched that line). My name is Carrol Hurley Ullrich and my e-mail is as listed.

    2. I have found numerous references to the Mullins family in Wyoming County originally in Grainger, Hancock, Tennessee and Wise, Va. There is a good chance that these families had Melungeon connections. Enter Melungeon in your search engine and review the material. They were a mysterious, triracial group that were discriminated against in Tennessee and Virginia. As many as possible relocated to other places including Pike, Russell, and Wise. Most would reveal little about their birthdates, marriages, etc. for fear of discovery. The Collins family in Wyoming County is the same. You might wish to read Brent Kennedy's book about the Melungeons. It is very interesting. There is a conference every summer in Wise about the descendents of these families. One of the leading names is Mullins. Hope this helps. Cathy
