I've found/read from several secondary sources that John Cooke and his wife were both brought to Virginia as endentured servents. The basic story is that they, with other young people, were dining on a ship in a London, and the ship set sail without their knowledge. Their passage was paid by landowners in Virginia thus becoming endentured servents. John is said to have worked not only his off but a couple years of his wife's also (perhaps when their first child was born?). Col. Henry T. Cook, got it right this time.. Rev Goode brings up something interesting about John Cooke. Seems records may be found at Christiansburg of his appointment as a JP. If that info resides in their archives, one should expect additional Cooke files there. It would worthwhile for a good search. I looked for early Cook marriages in my database and found MANY Cooks in the mid to late 1700. Nothing connected his wife. It was said he was in the Shenandoah as a dentured servant. I'm not far from Staunton, a potential source. Need to go there anyway. When visiting my Mother, I always stop in Christiansburg. Should be that way next month or so and will look for John Cooke then. Thanks again Lee
Regarding using information from conversations with others on the net: I would think it would be proper. It would be even more available than if written privately, so I see nothing wrong with it.
Something just found written by Rev. Goode. Ben Henderson Acord who was 86 years at the time told about a road survey trip he, as a youth, was on to take care of the horses of John McGraw, Gordon C. Lusk and A.H. Lester. Ben described A.H. (Tice) Lester. In part, he had a strong flow of Indian blood in his veins, and like the Indian he looked, he wore moccinsons during the winter and went bearfooted in the summer. He also wore a blanket instead of a coat. Thought some Lester descendants would be interested. Lee
Salley, you asked if it was proper should you use data from conversations and/or others on the net. I don't know, but please use mine. However in most cases my information is so long that it isn't pratical to send all things in response to ones questions or inquireries.. Perhaps those on this net may feel the same. Hope so, but they may wish to address this on this web net. Will send the cemetery list of which we spoke to your address. How are things with yout Families of Wyoming County publication going? Laura, I've just been transcribing the Ledger of Rev. Goode and that is what he had written In addition, it was said they were in the Shenandoah where they worked off their passage. Also, JohnCooke was appointed a constable during the time(s) he was reported settled in Wyoming County. Goode ref. a letter from Green M. Cook that he didn't arrive wntil 1790 or so. Capt Ralph Stewart arrived in about the year 1800. Goode pointed out that a man by the name of Milam was then on Milam Fork at Garden Branch, among other places before John Cooke and his sons first arrived. Now ho was this man Milam and where did he come from ? There are plenty of Milams now in Wyoming County, all super folks. Are they descendants of this man Milam ? Something to think about. Any comments ? Lee
I'm new on this particular list and do not know discussions of the past. I am looking for a brother of my grandfather by the name of Benjamin White. Benjamin was born in Kanawha County about 1879, the son of Nathaniel Wilson and Celia (Elswick) White. Benjamin had brothers and sisters by the names of: John Parks White, (my grandfather), Nancy White, Mary White, Samuel White, Sophy White, Anne White and George White. If anyone is researching this family in Wyoming Co. I would be more than glad to share information with them. -- History is made by the famous and the not so famous. Bud <West Virginia>
Lee, Elizabeth Walls is Elizabeth Ellison who married Harmon. Lodoska I beleive is their daughter. Lodoska is in the 1900 census living with Madison and Lucretia Ellison. These are my Ellisons. Did you ever start anything on the Ellisons? When we last talked you were interested in this family . Sherry Bell, You asked about the death of Joanna CORNETT. She is not listed in the Register of Deaths 1853-1890. I will place a free query for you in my publication "Families of Wyoming Co., WV" if you will send me your mailing address. Very few of my subscribers have a computer so I need actual mailing addresses with the queries. Good luck in your research, Sally Seaman-Williams
Hi Lee, I bought the book "Reference Book of Wyo. Co. History" by Mary Bowman. May I ask, does this book contain the 40% of Mr. Goode's notes and the other 60% are somewhere else or missing?? Since all my family back to 1850 came from Wyo. Co. --- I feel that I should explore every nook and cranny<BG>. I have been researching for 20 years and have Shorts, Shields, Bishops and a few more lines from the area. Thanks for any advice. Doug in Columbus, Ohio. Many thanks Lee. That's excellent information. I have been following the requests for information from the many listers, and the responses both you and Doug are providing are vitally important and on the mark. This is an excellent list. My thanks to both of you. Ed
Doug and Ed, I found this in Rev. Goode Ledger. Don't know if it helps. Dog you do fine work and thanks for reponding to my earlier requests Lee In the year 1876 there was a great contagince of diphtheria throughout the county and I did not attend school a day that winter. In 1877 father taught our school again. Silas Goode taught in 1878 and father for the last time in 1879-80 and Fount Goode taught the school two terms in the years 1880 and 1881. James Cook taught in 1882, and Thos J. Cooper in 1883-4 and Maude J. Walker, our first lady teacher in 1884-5. I think it was in 1877 that Rev. J.L. Marshall, then county Supertendant, visited our school and made us a speech. I think this was the only time I ever saw Rev. Marshall.

Hi Lee, To the best of my knowledge the Walls came from Halifax Co. VA way back. Some of them moved into Ohio during the early 1800's. They are a very hard family to trace. Some of them used Wall, some Wahl, so you can see why it's hard. Thanks Pat
Does Mr. Goode's work cover the Wall/Walls family in Wyoming Co? Interested in James Walls and Rachel Carter, also Ransom C. Walls. Any information on this surname may help me break thru the "brick wall" Thanks for a very informative list. I also descend from Eli Lusk,Ralph Stewart and have several of the surnames discussed since I recently joined the list. Pat
Can anyone researching the Meadows family of Wyoming Co. tell me If there is information on a Mary Jane Meadows who may have taken up with Ulysses Grant White after 1890? It is family legend that Grant ran away with Mary Jane but it is unknown whether or not the couple stayed in the Wyoming (Herndon Mountain) Co area or left. Grant was married to Victoria Shrewsberry White and had five children before he ran out when his infant son, Sheridan was born. Grant was born to Abraham and Mary Garrison White about 1866. He is located in their household on the 1880 Wyoming Co. Census. Family legend also states that Grant and Mary Jane Meadows may have had some children out of wedlock. Grant is my great-great-grandfather and to this day no one in the family has ever heard from him again. I don't know where he would have died and where he might have been buried. Can anyone out there help me to locate information on my grandfather? Thank you in advance. Gina White Rose
