    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/DFC.2ACI/2329 Message Board Post: Phillip G. Goff and Roy L. Lockhart announce the publication of their book, The Four Goff Brothers of Western Virginia, which will ship in late September 2003. The book follows the lives of James, John Turton, Thomas and Salathiel Goff as they forged the western Virginia frontier in the 1770s. After sojourns into what are now Loudoun Co., Va. and Hardy Co., W.Va., the Goff brothers raised families in present-day Preston Co., W.Va.; Tucker Co., W.Va. and Clark Co., Ky. Descendants are disbursed across the U.S., including descendants that lived in Wood Co., W.Va. Descendants married into families, including Stalnaker, Smith, Simpson, Davis, Springston, Bush, Heckert, Black, Hall, Brannon, Tallman, Kirkpatrick, Perkins, Haverty,Bolyard, Boyles, Bush, Denny, Hardman, Riddle, Heck, Moats, Stockwell, Sudduth and Swetnam. Building on 40 years of research by Lockhart, the authors in 1999 embarked on a quest to uncover and examine every contemporary reference to these four pioneering brothers. Scouring public and private archives from Massachusetts to Florida, Lockhart and Goff identified nearly 1,400 documents from 1766 to 1833 pertaining to the four Goff brothers. Among these were never-before-published records containing information on the early lives of the Goff brothers and their families. The resulting book is a fully indexed work, with newly prepared maps, original illustrations, signatures of all four men, quotes from three of the brothers and photographs of one child and 53 grandchildren of the four Goff brothers. With 400+ pages and nearly 2,300 footnotes, this hardbound book is divided into three parts. The first section recounts how the Goff brothers conquered the wilderness of western Virginia in search of land, while surviving Indian attacks and living through land disputes, slavery and personal struggles. The book continues with a genealogy of the Goff brothers, beginning with what is known about their parents and proceeding through their over 250 grandchildren born between 1792 and 1861. The book concludes with documentary appendices, including key court cases and surviving wills of three of the Goff brothers. The Four Goff Brothers of Western Virginia is a limited edition book. Surnames: CARR MARSH MASON BARNES Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/DFC.2ACI/450.681 Message Board Post: Hello- You don't give a date of birth for your May Mason so I can't even hazard a guess if she could be connected to my husband's great-grandmother or not. Maybe with more info from you it may turn out there's a tie between your Masons and my husband's. My husband's g-grandmother was named Rosetta Caroline Mason and she was born on July 14, 1864 in Parkersburg, W VA. Rosetta married James Llewellyn Carr on July 7, 1888 in Fremont, Dodge County, Nebraska. James L. Carr was a hack [stagecoach] driver there and their 2 children, John Mason Carr and Clara Carr were both born there. Then James and 'Rosa' headed back East with their young children to Bradford Co, PA around 1892 which is where James was born and where his family lived. They lived out their days in Bradford Co, PA and are both buried here. Rosetta's parents were David Mason [b W VA] and Elisabeth Smith [b OH]. I know nothing more about her parents and only know their names from Rosa's obit and also her marriage license. Family history says Rosa's mother Elisabeth was Native American. The only sibling of Rosetta's that I know for sure was Dora Mason who was married to Frank Lovett and he was a farmer in Sherman Co, Kansas in 1892-3 [maybe longer]. Dora and Frank had 5 children, 4 still living in February, 1893. All the info on Dora's family comes from a letter Dora sent to our Rosetta Caroline Mason Carr, dated February 1893. I am just starting out on this branch so I'd love to compare notes. Thanks. M. Lou Bradford Co, PA P.S. I have an old tintype of our Rosetta C. Mason. She looked quite tall. Do you have one of your ancestor that we could compare for resemblance?

    3. Hi Valerie, I looked at all of the Wood County cemeteries that have been posted on line, and found only three people with a similar surname (McCullick, McCullough) but they were about 100 years later. Often, people were not buried anywhere near where they died. It is possible he may have been transported elsewhere. If you have any hints about where he was originally from or if he had family elswhere, that may be a good place to look. Sorry couldn't be more help. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/DFC.2ACI/1586.1 Message Board Post: I am told by Mark Ruble, a descendant of George Ruble, that George did marry Mary Dils. George was born in 1753 and lived in Rockingham Co. Virginia at Brock's Gap, where he owned land. He sold parcels of his land in 1781, 1792, 1802, and 1805. His wife Catherine's name disappears from the land records after 1792. George appears on the tax lists for Rock. Co. through 1802, and by 1810 he is on the census for Wood Co. He is gone in 1820. We have found no record of George Ruble and Mary Dils' marriage, but it must have occurred after 1810, based on the census records, as you have seen. Mary Ruble's will, probated in Dec 1815, names devisees: Lewis (son), Wm. Dils (son, deceased), Anna Dils Lyons (daughter), Elizabeth Stephens (daughter), and Mary Dils Dean (daughter). Another record for Mary, also probated in 1815, lists as devisees: Henry Dils (son), William Dils heirs, John Dils (son), Ann Tyon (daughter), Elizabeth (daughter), and Mary Dean (daughter). Witnesses for both documents were John Barnett/(Barrett), John Dixon, and Samuel Barne/(Barrett). (This information is from a transcription on microfilm at West Virginia University.) George Ruble is believed to have died about 1814. There is an appraisal of his estate dated 1814 (Wood County Will Book 1-A, p. 198-200, Inventory & Appraisal), and his will was settled in 1816 (Wood County Will Book 1-A, p. 192-93, Settlement). I haven't seen these documents, but there may be mention of his widow Mary in these records. George is said to have had a son Isaac who doesn't appear in Wood Co. Does anyone know anything about Isaac? My interest in this family is to find the parents of Frances/Fanny Ruble b. ca 1806-10 in Virginia, living in Shenandoah Co. in 1829, not far from where George's family lived in Rockingham Co. until about 1802.

Surnames: Ruble, Frye, Lindamood Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/DFC.2ACI/2324 Message Board Post: Frances/Fanny Ruble requested a guardian in 1829 in Shenandoah County, Virginia, when she was about 21. Her guardian was her husband Abraham Lindamood. When she married him, the person who vouched for her (Michael Frye) did not share her famiy name. This seems to indicate that Fanny had no father, and that she was named in someone's will and was expecting an inheritance. The question is, whose will, and where was it filed? I can find no will naming Frances Ruble in Shenandoah County, but there may be one in another county where some of her family once lived. It could be the will of a relative with a different family name. There were Rubles in Wood Co., West Virginia--does anyone know of a will naming Frances Ruble? Any clues would be appreciated!

Surnames: CLARK, KINCHELOE, DYE Classification: Pension Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/DFC.2ACI/2322 Message Board Post: Deposition Case of Ellen M. (Dye) Clark, W.O. 606, 181 On this 4th day of Sept. 1908 at Sand Plains, County of Wood, State of West Va., before me George M. Beckett a special examiner of the Bureau of Pensions, personally appeared Florence Kincheloe, who being by me first duly sworn to answer truly all interrogatories propounded to her during this special examination of aforesaid claim for pension, deposes and says: I am 57 years of age. Wife of J. Taylor Kincheloe. P. O. Parkersburg, WV, R. F. D. # 8. I lived about ½ mile from Abisha Clark at the time of his death and had lived neighbor from my childhood. I was quite often in his home during the last months of his life and at his home the day before he died. Well no, I did not think he was dying the last time I saw him but I thought he would not live until morning. Well, Mrs. Clark said that day that he was getting worse each spell and she was quite uneasy about him that day. I don’t recall as to his health in particular until about the last 20 years of his life. I do not recall in what way he began ailing, that is to the exacting cause, but it was his lungs that troubled him at first. It was then said that he had several hemorrhages from the lungs, but I had heard of him having hemorrhages now and then until his death but never saw him in one, nor noticed that the phlegm was streaked with blood. He always spit up in a pan of ashes by his side. Oh yes, he spit up a good deal. Coughed and spit up for years or until death & became very thin in flesh and was very stooped; and he lived years longer than he was expected to live, but he had good care from his family & he was scarcely out of his house for years. Walk out into the yard & that almost exhausted him. I don’t know about hectic flush or night sweats or running off at the bowels, not even at the last. I think Mrs. Clark told me once that he had no bowel trouble. No I don’t recall that he or Mrs. Clark or anyone else say that he had heart disease, stomach, liver, kidney or bladder troubles. I recollect saying on several occasions to Mrs. Clark and the other members of the family that it was a wonder that some other disease did not develop in as much as he sat so long and got no exercise, but they always claimed that he did not seemed to be bothered with anything other than lung troubles, shortness of breath & smothering spells. I know nothing about his heartbeat, whether fast or slow or as to his temperature or whether his heart fluttered or palpitated. I never heard him complain at all about any pain in any part. I know I saw him have smothering spells especially after walking in the yard. The last day that I saw him alive, his head was way back & he was gasping for breath and was in misery on that account. Did not complain – just choked up and gasping for breath. No I don’t recall that he had a fever or pneumonia, Lagrippe nor (unreadable handwriting) with his old ailment. He had worse spells when he took cold & of course he took cold easily. (Rest of deposition is unreadable due to poor handwriting). Not related or interested. Questions fully understood and was correctly recorded and read to me. Florence Kincheloe - Deponent Subscribed and sworn to me before the 4th day of Sept. 1908, and certify that the contents were fully made known to deponent before signing. George M. 1. [WVWOOD] More depositions from the Civil War Pension file of Abishia Clark
    2. More depositions from the Civil War Pension file of Abishia Clark, brother of my GG-grandfather Joseph Thomas Clark who also served with him. Deposition Case of Ellen M. Clark, W.O. 606, 181 On this 3rd day of Sept. 1908 at Union District, County of Wood, State of West Va., before me George M. Beckett a special examiner of the Bureau of Pensions, personally appeared Elonzo Johnson, who being by me first duly sworn to answer truly all interrogatories propounded to him during this special examination of aforesaid claim for pension, deposes and says: I am 49 years of age. Farmer. P. O. Parkersburg, WV, R. F. D. # 7, res. 4 N. E. of same. The soldier Abishia Clark was my uncle by marriage. Ellen is my mother’s sister. Oh yes, I saw soldier often during the last years of his life, in fact knew well past the date of their marriage. He lived about 2 miles from here. I saw him the day before he died & attended his funeral. In fact I was at his house off & on and spent a good deal of time with him. A few times stayed overnight. He had poor health from the time I first knew him. Well I don’t know except a broken down constitution, except he had a cough when I first knew him & he never got rid of the cough, but he gradually failed in health. I don’t think he did any work the last ten years of his life, in fact scarcely out of his house or out to his barn for several years before death. In fact he gradually grew weaker and weaker and at death he was simply skin & bones, and had kind of a ruddy sallow color, in fact he didn’t have much color. He lived about 5 years longer than we thought he would live. He was of medium size –about 5 ft. 9 in. and noticeably thin in flesh. I saw two of his brothers and two of his sisters and they seemed reasonably healthy and I never heard that there was any hereditary disease in his family, for instance, lung consumption, heart or kidney troubles. Well, he didn’t seem to be in much misery during the last months or even years of his life except his cough, which was a hollow, deep-seated, distressed cough. Had all those years hacked and spit up an awful sight of phlegm of a yellowish color and very thick consistency. I don’t recall that I saw blood in his expectorations and I never saw him have a hemorrhage but I heard that he had hemorrhages. I guess pretty bad. Well, people supposed that his hemorrhages were from his lungs. Well, I don’t think he had a special stomach trouble; still he had to be careful as to what he ate –given a light diet. But a person in his condition would not have much appetite anyway. He did not complain of misery in his stomach or pain in that region, or dyspepsia, nor did he vomit that I recall. No I don’t recall that he ever complained of diarrhea, dysentery or running off at the bowels or piles, until the last few days of his life when his bowels ran off considerably—his bowels moved frequently the day before he died while I was with him. Whether he had night sweats, I do not know personally, but the family said he had them & then he told me so himself several times. And I saw that he had the (unreadable) flush. No kidney or bladder troubles or anything like paralysis at any time to my knowledge; had no liver trouble or malaria that I know of. Whether he ever had rheumatism, I do not recall. Never knew him to be lame. Didn’t think he was a rheumatic. Habits always good as far as I know. I don’t know whether his temperature was high or low or whether he chilled. All I know was heart trouble; frequently he told me that he did not rest well the night previous because of pain or misery about his heart. Whether his heart beat fast or slow or whether it fluttered or whether he had palpitations, I do not know. Not a special that I known, not even as fact. I do not know how long the last sinking spell (?) cause at last I think he caught a little cold; he took cold most easily of course. He had been worse only a few days. No, he had no typhoid fever, pneumonia or Lagrippe that I know of. I think he took a cold & had a sinking spell, which spells he had frequently for which he did not rally. The day before he died, I told his wife that I thought he would not live two days for he seemed weaker after each coughing spell, but she said, “Oh I think he will rally.” She had been used to seeing him rally from other sinking spells. Well, he was stooped right smart and his breast was sunken in like. No breast at all scarcely. I doubt if he weighed 100 lbs.--at death, but nearly that thin for years. Well, I think lung consumption was the immediate cause of his death. Don’t think there was any complication when it was heart trouble. For years he had a spittoon by his side. He was able to go to be to sleep until he died. He was in bed the day before he died propped up to about half sitting position for he was very short of breath and about gone. Able to walk about until just a few days before he died and I think he would get hold of a chair or something like that to assist him. Whether claimant or soldier had been previously married, I have not heard that. Claimant has not remarried. Not interested in this claim at all. I hereby understood the questions asked me and my answers are correctly recorded as read to me. E. R. Johnson – Deponent Subscribed and sworn to me before the 3rd day of Sept. 1908, and certify that the contents were fully made known to deponent before signing. George M. Retired farmer. P. O. Parkersburg, W. Va., R. F. D. # 8. I knew Abisha Clark from about the time of the war and lived neighbor till his death, and about ½ mile apart in his last years. Saw him last alive several days before he died. No, I don’t think that he contracted a cold or had Lagrippe at the last. Satisfied that he had no pneumonia or fever. It was mine and it was the general understanding that the fatal illness the culmination of his old ailments – lung consumption—for which we thought he suffered for years, but he kept up pretty well for years. In fact he lived many years longer than we thought he would. He had _______(unreadable) cough, it was thought he had consumption when he came from the army, but he kept up pretty well for years; a few years then had hemorrhaging. I understand after that an invalid. He coughed and spit up often (rest unreadable.) Don’t know about night sweats, _______ flush or running off at the bowels not even at the last. No dropsy that I know of. No paralysis. Never knew him to complain of pain even about his heart & lungs. His voice kept up pretty well even to the last. He was much stooped and hollow-chested & very thin in flesh. No known bladder, stomach, liver or heart troubles then. Noticed no lameness that I know of. His whole trouble seemed to be about the lungs & coughing & hawking and spitting and shortness of breath. Never complained of his heart in particular that I can recall but he did complain of his lungs at times. Not much of a complainer anyway. No knowledge as to his condition, or pulse or as to his consumption, or whether his heart beat slow or fast, or whether it fluttered or palpitated. Good habits----very good. I wasn’t much acquainted with his people but I never heard that there was any consumption in the family. Neither claimant nor soldier was previously married. Not interested in this claim at all. I hereby understood the questions asked me and my answers are correctly recorded as read to me. J. T. They would be in the county courthouse for the area where they lived in the 1880 census that I gave you. That is where I would look. Sandy
