I thought it might be of interest to someone. Doris McIntire Straley of Gahanna finally got to join her beloved husband in heaven on Oct. 13, 2003. She was born Jan. 4, 1913, in New Martinsville, WV, and grew up in Parkersburg, WV. She was the fourth of eight children of Thayer and Lizzie Etta McIntire. Mrs. Straley graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1930 and received an associates degree in elementary education form Ohio University in 1932. She earned a bachelor's degree in special education from OU, graduating in 1962 in the same class as her daughter, Thaylia "Ti". In 1970, at the age of 58, Mrs. Straley earned her masters in education for children with special needs from Ohio State University. She had a long career as a substitute teacher, tutor, and remedial reaing instructor, working for the school systems in Circleville, Amanda, Stoutsville, Lancaster, and Canal Winchester. She retired in 1977. Her husband, Howard, ran a Gravely Tractor dealership at 100 E. Main St. in Lancaster fo a number of years. He and barber Ted Purcell, both age 51, drowned in a fishing accident in Georgian Bay, Ontario, Canada, on Sept. 6, 1962 Howard Straley was a key organizer and sponsor of Lancaster's very first Soap Box Derby, which was won by son, Scott. Both Scott and Thaylia were staff writers for the Lancaster Eagle Gazette in the late 1950's and early 1960's. Mrs. Straley also was preceeded in death by all seven of her siblings and one niece, Carol Koon of Littleton, CO. She is survived by daughters, Carol Straley, Thaylia "Ti" Disbennett and Mary Martha Rudoloph, all of whom live in Gahanna; and son Howard Scott Straley of Littleton, CO; granddaughters, Cindy Disbennett and Kimberly Rudolph opf Gahanna and Kristen Straley of Carrollton, TX, as well as numerous nieces and nephews acorss the United States. A brief spiritual service will be held at 2 P.M. on Saturday, Oct. 18, at Central College Presbyterian Church on Sunbuty Road in the Westerville Area. A wake will be held at the home of her daughter Thaylia. A family memorial service is tentatively scheduled for late December. In accordance with her wishes, Mrs. Straley's body was donated to Ohio State University for medical research. In lieu of flowers, friends may contribute in her memory to their favorite charity.
