    3. Wilma--Thank you so much. Some of these are my kin, almost without a doubt, and what you have is about 90 percent more than I knew about any of them except my GGGF James William Sheppeard. I hope to have time one of these days to pursue this line seriously. (Meanwhile I will wonder what constituted a "tythable"!) You've given me some great leads, and you were very kind to look. 2. For the person who was asking about the names PHELPS and SHEPERD... There are entries for James, Elijah, Hugh, and John PHELPS on the 1801 through 1811 Wood County, VA tax lists. In 1801, Hugh was listed with 4 "tythables"; then in 1802 the entry was for 3 "tythables"; and 1803 his entry says just 1 "tythable. James, Elijah, and John were listed with 1 "tythable" for each year 1801-1811 The first tax list entry for SHEPHERD is for Jonathan in 1807 and continues through 1811. There is an entry for a James SHEPHERD in 1809. 1. [WVWOOD] Surnames: Wood/Parker/Barrett/Goucher/Hunt
    2. Hi List. I type bios for PA Roots and ran across this one. I thought someone might be researching some of these names here in Wood Co. Check out the PA Roots bios for every County in PA at Rootsweb. Martha Cross Sargent Aleppo Township, Greene County, PA Joshua Wood, farmer and stock-grower, was born in Tyler County, West Va, October 8, 1842. He is a son of John and Sarah (Hunt) Wood, Who were, respectively, of Scotch and German and English origin. His father was born in Greene County, where he spent all his life as a farmer and died in 1868. His family numbered ten children, of whom Joshua Wood is the ninth. He was reared in Richhill Township, and attended the common schools. Early in life he learned the carpenter's trade, at which he worked until 1878, when he began farming. He is the owner of a well stocked and improved farm of 180 acres. In 1861 Mr. Wood enlisted in Company H, Twentieth Volunteer Infantry, where he served three months, then re-enlisted in Company B, Seventh West Virginia Volunteer Infantry, and served until 1862, when he was discharged for disability, having had two of his fingers shot off. He subsequently spent some time in Great Salt Lake City. In 1874 Mr. Wood married a widow lady of Parkersburg, West Va. Her first husband was John Milton Parker, a railroad engineer on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, who was killed in 1871 by the explosion of his engine. Mr. And Mrs. Parker were the parents of two children, Mertie and Kate Parker. Mrs. Wood's maiden name was Emma Barrett, a daughter of Caleb and Jemima (Goucher) Barrett, who was of German origin.Mr. and Mrs Wood have three children - Earl, Herald, and Iona. Mr. Wood is a Democrat. He and his wife are members of the Christian Church. (Source: History of Greene County, Pennsylvania. Samuel P. Bates, Chicago, 1888, p. 572)

    3. Joanne, I too would really appreciate a lookup, or rather two, in that little book if and when you have time. One would be for Sheppeard (or any other spelling--Shepard, shepherd, etc.) and the other for Phelps. Thanks so much. I do have a copy of a picture of the Creel Station. I also have a picture of George R. Creel with wife Minnie, another woman that I don't know and three men. I believe a couple of the boy's to be George R. Creel's sons from a former marriage. They would be the children of first wife Catherine Harris.
