I am hoping to find the date of Hartley and Susanna's death. So far there are no documents just a lot of hearsay. As my grandfather has liver cancer and we live far away from Virginia, I am hoping some kind soul could help me out. Thanks for listening, jennifer bumann

Ann, The following SHEPHERD appear on the 1822 Wood County tax list: SHEPHERD, William (also on 1821) SHEPHERD, Robert SHEPHERD, Thomas (also on 1821) That may or may not help. [I am not researching these people, just took some extra notes.] Wilma
Hi Ann, Birth records were not keep by county or state government back then. The two most likely places to find births during the 1820s would be Family Bibles and church records. If you know the denomination of the church, checking their records would be the best bet. However back in the 1820s there were not very many churches even. Les At 07:45 PM 12/03/2003 -0500, Ann T. Thanks, Gerry, That's what I suspected, but I've seen contradictory references from different time periods. Your explanation makes sense. Linda <The whole area was Kanawha County when Wood County was created from Kanawha in 1798, then Wood was extended further southwest when Mason was cut away from Kanawha in 1804. Jackson then took part of both Wood and Kanawha (along with part of Kanawha and Lewis) when it was formed in 1831. So the SAME Belleville has actually been in several different counties at different times.>
9I think I sent this to the Jackson County list by mistake instead of the Wood County list.) The whole area around Belleville was Kanawha County when Wood County was created from Kanawha in 1798, then Wood was extended further southwest when Mason was cut away from Kanawha in 1804. Jackson then took part of both Wood and Kanawha (along with part of Kanawha and Lewis) when it was formed in 1831. So the SAME Belleville has actually been in several different counties at different times. My ancestor's brother, Jacob Parchment, was scalped by Indians in 1785 while at the Garrison Stockade at Belleville. It was then just about on the border between Harrison County to the north (which covered the north central quarter of what became West Virginia) and Greenbrier to the south (which covered the south-central part of what became West Virginia). The counties then were mostly only on paper. Kanawha County was created from parts of Greenbrier and Montgomery (the southern quarter of the state) Counties in 1788. The border between Kanawha and Harrison was still the same until after Wood was created from Harrison in 1798. The southern boundary of Wood shifted down the river when Mason was formed in 1804. For a nice view of the changing boundaries of counties of Virginia (and other states) see http://www.genealogyinc.com/maps/uscf.htm This site also shows county boundaries for each census. Thank you for the response. I'll have to get out a good map and try to follow it. Maybe I can get it figured out. Linda Belleville is actually in two, maybe three counties. If you follow Pond Creek Road from Route 68 Wood county, you will end in the next county and everyone who lives right there will tell you you're in Belleville. Also, when you turn in one direction, it's less than a mile to the next county and turn the other way...your back in Wood. It's very confusing when trying to locate anything that has, supposedly, been mapped out. However, Fort Belleville was in Wood county.
That's a good question, and I'm waiting for the answer too. In 1850, Belleville was in Jackson Co., but I've seen reference to someone born in Belleville in Wood Co. years earlier. Unless there's two places named Belleville ... Linda in Tennessee
I need help in seeking a birth record for my gggf James William Sheppeard, who was born in Wood/Wirt on March 21 1822. Can anyone tell me the right site, or, if you have quick access, try looking it up for me? The names of his parents are totally lacking so far, and I would really like to break this brick wall. Many thanks in advance. Good holidays to all. Ann
Can anyone tell what what county the Belleville area would have been in in 1810? I am trying to locate court records from that time. My relative had to prove that he was a US citizen in order to keep his lands on the south fork of Lee Creek. Thanks Sandi in Idaho

This is my 2003 Addenda to my 1976 Index to : "The Genealogical History of the Archer Family" by M.B. Archer, F.J. Heer Co., Columbus, 1919. This 100 pp. book was compiled by Martin B. Archer (1860-1924), a former Noble Co., OH Probate Judge and Ohio State Senator based on extensive interviews of and letter correspondence with his near and distant relatives in Noble Co., OH; Wood and Jackson Cos., WV, Swift Co., MN, and Norton Co., KS during the period 1890-1918. My addenda is based on 30 years of records verification of the data in M.B. Archer's book. I have avoided using any secondary sources, such as L.H. Watkins' 1887, "History of Noble County" preferring primary and family sources who personally knew the principals they described. I believe this material will be new to Archer family researchers. I have much more genealogical material on many of the families mentioned in this book and will be happy to exchange information with researchers whether they have a copy of the book or not. The book and my Index with the 1976 errata and addenda are in many genealogical libraries around the United States. A reprint of the 1919 book is available from: Higginson Book, Co., 148 Washington St., PO Box 778, Salem, MA 01970; 978-745-7170; http://www.higginsonbooks.com (higginsn@cove.com). The 1976 Index is available from Higgenson separately from the book. (Disclaimer: I have no financial interest in Higgenson's products or the 1976 Index.) The 1919 book without the index is also available as a microfilm copy: Library of Congress Microfilming Division as a copy of the original which has been retired from circulation as it was too brittle: :LC Call No.: CS71.A67 1919; Microfilm 74737 CS; Control No.:9711430. My 2003 ADDENDA DOES NOT INCLUDE THE COMPLETE INDEX. IT IS ONLY A 2003 ADDENDA TO THE INDEX What is included in this 2003 Addenda: 1. Martin B. Archer's unpublished additions and corrections 2. Corrections of typos and printer's errors 3. Correction of misleading spelling of names 4. Some comments on name variants of French and German names that will aid in records searches.
