I will be more than glad to do a lookup if any of these will help. Alabama • Minnesota • Ohio • District of Columbia • New Jersey • South Dakota • Georgia • New York • Texas • Illinois • North Carolina
Most of the 1890 census records were lost in a fire. Description These records have been extracted from the remaining population schedules for the 1890 Federal Census, which was destroyed by a fire at the Commerce Department in Washington, DC on 10 January 1921. The surviving fragments consists of 1,233 pages or pieces, including enumerations for Alabama, the District of Columbia, Georgia, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, South Dakota, and Texas. The records of only 6,160 of the 62,979,766 people enumerated survived the fire. The original 1890 census enumerated people differently than ever before that time. Each family was enumerated on a separate sheet of paper. 1890 was the only year this was done. Alabama-Perry County District of Columbia-Q, S, 13th, 14th, RQ, Corcoran, 15th, SE, and Roggs streets, and Johnson Avenue Georgia-Muscogee County (Columbus) Illinois-McDonough County: Mound Township Minnesota-Wright County: Rockford New Jersey-Hudson County: Jersey City New York-Westchester County: Eastchester; Suffok County: Brookhaven Township North Carolina-Gaston County: South Point Township, Ricer Bend Township; Cleveland County: Township No. 2 Ohio-Hamilton County (Cincinnati); Clinton County: Wayne Township South Dakota-Union County: Jefferson Township Texas-Ellis County: S.P. no. 6, Mountain Peak, Ovila Precinct; Hood County: Precinct no. 5; Rusk County: Precinct no. 6 and J.P. no. 7; Trinity County: Trinity Town and Precinct no. 2; Kaufman County: Kaufman. Virginia. Now I don't know how true this information is but wondering if anyone has access to census records for 1890. Her husband Israel Thompson died in 1882 and is buried in the same cemetery in Loudoun Co. Va. So my thinking is after he died she went there to be with a child but was returned to be buried with her husband. Her children were Leonidas Thompson; Phillip Doddridge Thompson; and Benjamin Thompson. Phillip m. Lucy Carter Dame I doubt that she was there for a sibling. She was 93 and everyone else was dead. Would appreciate anything anyone can find out. I'm wondering why she was there. Thanks. Janean

I apologize in advance to those who may receive this message more than once through being subscribed to multiple lists. Research on the John Austin family which originated in Monongalia County about 1804 (and spread) is now available at the Austin Family Association of America web site, http://www.rahul.net/afaoa/ . Select Austin Research - then Southern Austin databases (scroll down to that) - then John Austin, Monongalia VA to access the database. Updates and additions gratefully accepted - and if it assists you in your research, please let me know. I also have information on the very few other Austin families in central WV that are not related to this lineage. I already knew of Mary Iaac vs Ice, and have seen the reference from that book. I've located one source for that Wood Co book, but it's pretty expensive, $400. I have emailed Alan Eckerd, and he knows of the story, but doesn't think it too plausible.
I'm sorry I don't know your name, but can you please tell me if, where and how the "History of Wood County W VA 1980" with its section on the "Sheppard Family" is available or at least the author's and/or publisher's name(s)? I am trying to track the apparently little-known Peter Sheppard, born in Scotland (or possibly the West Indies) who came to Wood County sometime in the decades around 1800. Peter was almost certainly the father of James William Sheppeard, 1822-1903--another medical doctor, and my G G Grandfather. Peter Sheppard lived in the Palestine area. Any scrap of further information will be very much appreciated.
