Wirt County Journal July 28, 1999 Remember When ... * From the Wirt County Journal files February 4, 1921 School Reports Report of the Conards Run School for the fourth month ending January 25th is as follows: Number pupils enrolled this month, boys 16, girls 16, total 32. Average daily attendance boys 14, girls 13, total 27. Percent of daily attendance, boys 93, girls 90, total 91. Those present every day were Anna and Charlie Thomas, Wellington and Mildred Cain, Eunice and Robert Holbert, Clifford and Edward Dye, Leo Mitchell, and Virginia and Burdette George. Clarice Somerville, teacher Report of the College Grove School for the fourth month ending January 25. Number pupils enrolled 20. Average daily attendance 18. Percent of attendance, boys 97, girls 100. Present every day were: Elsie, Edna, Nina and Reta Somerville, Texa and Fay Utter, Laura McFee, Peal Miller, Claud, Russel, Hurshel and Robert Somerville, Ralph Andrick and Harry Coplin. Ruth Somerville, teacher Virgil W. Pepper Virgil W. Pepper, one of our county's former bright and progressive young men of Parkersburg the last year or more, died in hospital of Parkersburg last week following an operation. Death we were informed was caused by poison from anesthetic. Livery Notice The Elizabeth Livery Barns will be glad to serve you at any time in the way of general delivery business. Call either hotel. McFee of Chestnut Run has moved to the Lillie Wilson property on Franklin Street. J. P. Deever, road patrolman for Burning Springs District, transacted business before the county court Saturday. Dannie Hays of Munday visited relatives in Elizabeth from Friday till Sunday evening. R. Gilbert, one of Tucker Creek's good citizens and farmers, transacted business in town on Saturday. October 17, 1958 Western District Convention To Meet In Elizabeth Saturday, Local Woman's Club Hostess Members of Elizabeth Woman's Club have completed plans for one of the biggest events in recent years in club affairs here, as they will be hostesses in the annual West District's 45th convention. A clever "Round- Up" theme has been developed for injection into the all-day program this Saturday Oct. 18) at the Baptist Church. Luncheon will be served in the high school gymnasium by the Band Boosters Club to an expected group of 150 or more. First of a Series Of Wirt Community Meetings to Be At Burning Springs Because of a falling off of attendance in the Self Study - Self Help Program at recent meetings held in Elizabeth, it was decided Wednesday night to hold a series of meetings - week by week in several of the rural Wirt County communities, Mrs. Eloise H. Sturm, secretary of Wirt County Industries, reports. Local and Personal Events of Interest Clarence Foutty, City, and a granddaughter, Miss Carol Foutty, of Weirton, spent two days last week visiting his daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Tommy Exline, and daughters, Plainfield, 0. Peggy Sue Law, granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. B.F. Morgan, is visiting in Parkersburg this week. Mrs. O. F. (Grace) Woodyard of Palestine became quite ill and was taken to a Parkersburg hospital Monday for medical attention. Vance and Lena Ice of Allegan, Mich., (she being the former Lena Miller) arrived here last week to spend a few days visiting relatives, including Mrs. Louise Burkhammer, Mrs. C. B. Nutter, Mrs. Zetta Robinson, and others. Bill and Alma Busch of Breckenridge, Mich., spent a few days here since the middle of last week coming to bring Mrs. Anna Kemp and Mrs. Minnie Livingston back to their home here, after a few weeks visit up north. The Busches also visited his sister, Chessie Robinson, Willard, O., his brother, Jack, at Vincent, O., her sister, Zelma Dulin, City, his uncle, Porter Ryan, Belpre, O., and Jack's relatives in the Hartley-Macfarlan area. Jack works for the huge Dow Chemical Co., Midland, Mich. Clint Lockhart of Mayberry section, Rt. 1, Palestine, was here Saturday and fetched the editor a long-necked gourd, the kind folks used to make drinking dippers on. This measures 33 inches long.
