    3. Wirt County Journal August 11, 1999 Obituaries Freddie J. Coon Freddie 1. Coon, 75, of Mt. Zion, died August 5 at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center in Grantsville. He was born in Spencer, a son of the late Fred and Etta Lee Husk Coon. He was a member of VFW Post 59, FFA and was of Baptist faith. He was a retired mechanic for the Hertz Corp. He is survived by his wife, Murlene Starcher Coon; one son, Charles Coon, of Mt. Zion; four daughters, Beverly Wagner of South Point, Ohio, Norma Coon of Mt. Zion, Sandra Luskin of Parma, Ohio, Sheila Hardbarger of Elizabeth; two brothers, John Coon of Easton, Pa., and Bernard Coon of Mt. Zion; four sisters, Edna Dennis of Adair, Okla., Alice Metzel of Lafayette, Ohio, Effie Coon of Cleveland, Ohio, and .Daisy Donato of Mansfield, Ohio; 17 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Freddie Dean Coon Jr.; two brothers, Gifford Coon and Holly Lee Coon; and one sister, Nancy McKown. Funeral services were held at Stump Funeral Home in Grantsville August 9 with the Rev. William D. Stutler officiating. Interment was in Coon Cemetery on Kerby Ridge. Rennie Minney Rennie L. Minney, 90, of Stumptown, died August 2 at Parkview Healthcare Center, Parkersburg. She was born in Gilmer County, a daughter of the late Ethnie and Bertha Queen Adams. She was a member of Rosedale Baptist Church. She is survived by one daughter, Gilda A. San Roman; three sons, the Rev. Walter D. Minney, H. Randall Minney, both of Parkersburg, and Roger A. King of Elizabeth; one brother, Myron Adams of Brookpart, Ohio; five sisters, Nina Snyder of Parkersburg, Freda Casto of Clarksburg, Lorena Jones of Sand Fork, Alta Hamman of Stowe, Ohio, and Bonnie Carson of Canton, Ohio; nine grandchildren; one stepgrandson; seven stepgreat-grandsons; and one great-great-grandson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elder Leslie V. Minney; two sisters; and four brothers. Services were held August 5 at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Elder Mark Minney officiating. Burial was in Elijhu Stump Cemetery. Bert S. Pugh Bert S. Pugh, 76, of Vienna, died August 1 at Selby General Hospital, Marietta. He was born in Dallison, a son of the late John A. and Vada Mae Longwells Pugh. He was a retired brick mason. He was self-employed through the Parkersburg newspapers. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having received the Purple Heart. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Betty J. Barnhouse Pugh; one son, Gary A. Pugh of Dale City, Va.; two grandchildren, Kari and Casey Pugh of Dale City; and four sisters, Hazel Nutter, Ethyln Clark and Grace Knopp, all of Vienna, and Dolly Byrd of Elizabeth. He was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters. Services were held August 5 at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Vienna, with the Rev. W. L. Combs officiating. Burial was in Clover Cemetery, Spencer. Mamie J. Roberts Mamie J. Roberts, 93, of Parkersburg, died August 1 at the Willows Nursing Home. She was born in Wirt County, a daughter of the late Emanuel and Diana Corathers Caltrider. She was a homemaker and a member of North Parkersburg Baptist Church, Order of the Eastern Star Wirt County Chapter 113 and the Daughters of America, Goodwill Council No. 25. She is survived by two daughters, Shirley Daugherty and husband Tharrel of Slate and Norma Caplinger and husband Richard of Lubeck; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mildred Soka of Mansfield, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her husband, Linza D. Roberts; one son, Bernard W. Roberts; three sisters, Grace Arnold, Cora, Fluharty, Ida Amos; one brother, Harry Caltrider; and one infant sister, Minni Caltrider. Services were August 4 at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Pastor Bill Stout officiating. Burial was in K of P Cemetery, Elizabeth. C. Schreckengost Charles "Eddie" Schreckengost, 74, of Parkersburg, died August 4 at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital. He was born March 12, 1925, in Parkersburg, a son of the late Dewey and Harriet Lowers Schreckengost. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and retired from Curry Transfer and Storage in Parkersburg, where he was a mechanic for 25 years. He is survived by his wife, Joanne Deems Schreckengost; three daughters, Autumn McPeek and Phyllis Fulton, both of Parkersburg, and Vickie Cantrell of Clarksville, Tenn.; one son, Charles E. Schreckengost of Grove City, Ohio; one brother, George Schreckengost of Wirt County; and three sisters, Crosby McCartney of Moundsville, Iona Seebaugh and Hope Deems, both of Parkersburg; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one infant son, John; six brothers; two sisters; and one great-grandson. Services were August 6 at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Pastor Raymond Ray officiating. Body will be cremated and ashes will be buried at convenience of family. Virgil Sheppard Virgil "Kenny" Sheppard, 58, of Parkersburg, formerly of Unity Plaza, died August 2 at Camden Clark Memorial Hospital. He was born in Parkersburg, a son of the late Harrison and Mae Nicewonder Sheppard. He was a member of the Camden Avenue Church of Christ. He was a graduate of Parkersburg High School, Parkersburg Community College, West Virginia State College and received a master's degree from WVU - Morgantown in social work. Despite his physical disabilities, he was known for his deep faith and many accomplishments. He is survived by one sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Fred Packer of Parkersburg; four brothers, Harry Jr. of Harrisville, James H. and wife Elizabeth of Clintwood, Va., Donald and wife Carolyn of Waverly, Ohio, and Keith and wife Shirley of Parkersburg; and several nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by one brother, Earl M. Sheppard; and one sister, Mildred Springston. Services were held August 5 at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, south Parkersburg, with Eugene Conger officiating. Burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Florence C. Snider Florence C. Snider, 94, of Elizabeth, died August 7 at Heartland of Preston County, Kingwood. She was born June 27, 1905, at Big Bend, Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Thornton C. and Molly Thomas Cain. She was a longtime member of Elizabeth United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Mary Elizabeth Circle and the Women's Society of Christian Service. She was a 55-year member and past matron of Wirt Chapter 113, Order of the Eastern Star. She was a homemaker and a lifelong resident of Wirt County. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, William Richard and Norma Wotring Snider of Kingwood and Edwin Cain and Annabelle Gibson Snider of Elizabeth; one daughter, Eleanor S. Sims of Kingwood; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, C. Merrell Snider in 1981; one son-in-law, Edward B. Sims; four brothers; one sister; and one grandson. Services were held August 10 at Elizabeth United Methodist Church with the Revs. David A. Stackpole and Casey Stinespring officiating. Burial was in Knights of Pythias Cemetery, Elizabeth. Arrangements were entrusted to the Busch Funeral Home of Elizabeth. Memorials may be made to the Elizabeth United Methodist Church Building Fund, c/o Busch Funeral Home, P.O. Box 43, Elizabeth, W.Va. 26143. Barbara E. Walker Barbara Ellen Walker, 83, of Oak Hill, died August 6 in Oak Hill. She was a devoted wife and mother, a Baptist and a lifelong resident of Fayette County. She is survived by her husband, James; three daughters and sons-in- law, Patty and John Sumner of Parkersburg, Marylu Malker of Oak Hill, Sandi and John Parente of Georgetown, Pa.; three grandchildren and their spouses, Kenny Sumner of Marietta, Ga., Terri and Mark Romine of Elizabeth, Tammi and John Woodrum of Nallen; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Hilda R. Painter of Sarasota, Fla. She was preceded in death by her parents, John F. and Sarah Alice Pennington Rainey; two brothers; and two sisters. Services were held August 9 at Tyree Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Bill Menefee officiating. Burial was in Plateau Historical Cemetery.
