Wirt County Journal September 22, 1999 Remember When ... * from the Wirt County Journal files. April 8, 1921 Snyder-Bray Miss Bonnie Snyder of Elizabeth and Mr. W. R. Bray of Logan were united in marriage at Logan on last Saturday. Miss Snyder is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Snyder of Elizabeth and was formerly one of Wirt County's progressive lady teachers. She has been holding a position for the past four or five months in a post office at Logan. The journal extends hearty congratulations to the happy couple. Attention Sir Knights To the members of the order who have not been attending regularly, do you know what you have been missing? Don't you know on last Monday night we had work in second and third degrees and were honored by a visit from Hope Lodge No. 10 of Parkersburg by the following named brothers: Messrs. S.S. Johnson, S.S. Roush, C.A. Smith, J.H. McKry, C.J. Duncan and C.E. Sprinkle, who assisted in conferring the degree in a most impressive and pleasing manner. These gentlemen are of the kind that believe in making life worth while and stand for high and noble things in the order. Their visit was very much appreciated by the local order and they are most cordially invited to come again. We have still further good news. We have the promise of a visit from the Grand Chancellor, Hon. E.T. England, and the Grand Keeper of Records and seal, Hon. Samuel B. Montgomery, on next Monday night, April 11, 7:30 p.m. These men are not only the big men in Pythianism in the state of West Virginia, but have to do with matters of public moment and the citizens of the town should feel themselves honored by a visit from these distinguished gentlemen, and Phythianism in particular should be wonderfully stimulated and encouraged by their coming - Let us hope that it will be. We are anticipating great results from this gathering and it is earnestly requested that every member of the local organization make a special effort to be present and do his part in making the evening a success. The principles for which this Great Order stands are of too much importance for good citizenship and the better life of the community for anyone who has ever been affiliated with the organization to allow themselves to be deprived of its elevating results. Light refreshments served at close of session. Walter Hoffman, K of R & S.; W.M. Pomroy, C.C. December 12, 1958 34 Deer Killed Here last Week Deer hunters were out by the hundreds in Wirt County daily all last week (Dec. 1-6) and a total official kill for the county is listed as 34, according to conservation officer Ralph E. Smith, City, on Wednesday of this week. Smith said that several arrests were made for various violations of the hunting regulations, and one arrest for an illegal burning charge. There has been no report of any hunting accident. Most of the deer killed in Wirt were checked at the Munday Esso Station, City, but a few of them in Ritchie, Roane and Wood counties. Tuck Bumgarner in Engraving Business A local youth, Ray H. (Tuck) Bumgarner, has gone into a partnership business with a fellow printer on the Parkersburg News, John F. (Jack) Sams, in establishing a new business firm in Parkersburg, the Quality Engraving Co., making half-tone and line etched zinc engravings for newspaper, and commercial printing use. Tuck is the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray H. Bumgarner, City, and a former Journal employee during his school years here. He is a graduate of the printing school of West Virginia Institute of Technology, then served two years in the U.S. Air Force, with overseas duty on the Stars and Stripes service newspaper, in Tokyo, Japan. He has been employed for most of the time since then as a printer with the Parkersburg News. Elizabeth's 'Best' Christmas Street Decorations Are Up What appears to be the best business area Christmas decorations in the history of the community were installed the middle of this week by men from the Elizabeth Lions Club, and the town will be officially "lit up" this coming Saturday afternoon and evening, with the arrival of Santa Claus, who will be greeted at the Tucker Creek Bridge and escorted up town by a parade with the Wirt High band participating. Fire Damages Honaker Home The home of Mrs. Georgia Honaker, off the old Railroad Right-of-Way, City, was damaged by fire early afternoon Thursday, but the quick and efficient work by members of the Elizabeth Volunteer Fire Department was credited with saving the home. Skaters Find Ideal Spot at Hatchery The early winter season of the past several days, including freezing temperatures down to near zero on several mornings, has provided winter sport for ice skaters, and a few are enthusiastic at finding almost ideal conditions at the State Fish Hatchery, across the L.K.R. from Palestine.
