Hello List! Taken from my copy of the Roane County Journal, March 1999 "Congratulations..to the newly formed Wirt County Historical Society!! Their meetings are on the 3rd Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Dora Bee Woodyard Library in the Wirt County High School on Mulberry Street. Annual membership dues are $10.00 per individual. Their next meeting will be on April 19th. Members will discuss future programs and plans to begin a newsletter. One of the first goals of the new Society is to help preserve records in the court house. Vice-president Adith Spencer is currently doing an inventory of the oldest record books to see which are most in need of repair or rebinding before helping to apply for a grant. Wirt County's oldest books include Register of Births, Deaths and Marriages dated 1854 but now includes Register of Marriage Bonds beginning when the county formed in 1848. The Society will also work for the preservation of area buildings, monuments and markers that have historical significance." My understanding is that there has only been one meeting so far. Per Adith, one of the first projects is to add to the genealogy area at the Dora Bee Woodyard Library. They are encouraging members and anyone who is interested to donate Pedigree Charts etc. for the convenience of those doing research. (Hope you don't mind that I passed that along, Adith!!) I think this is a great thing and only wish I lived closer so I could help out! Address: Wirt County Historical Society, P.O. Box 891, Elizabeth, WV 26143 Gloria
