Wirt County Journal June 23, 1999 Remember When ... * From the Wirt County Journal Files December 21, 1920 School Items The Elizabeth Outside and Independent District Boards of Education, compromising the Joint District Board, will meet at Elizabeth next Saturday, January 1. School Reports Report of the Bell School (upper room) beginning November 29 and ending December 24,1920. Enrolled boys 6, girls 13, total 19. Average daily attendance boys 4, girls 13, total 17. Percent of attendance boys 88, girls 95, total 92. Pupils present everyday were: Effie Hammer, Jennie Wolverton, Mildred Bell, Jeanette Depue, Lelia and Leah Richards, Ada Bell, Osa Pepper, and Mildred Wyer. The following is a report for the second month of the Lynn Camp School: boys, girls 12, total 21. Average attendance boys 6, girls 8, total 14. Percent of attendance boys 95, girls 90, average 92-1/2. Those being neither absent nor tardy were: Charles Cheuvront, Gay Sheppard and Jay Ott. Jack Mills of near Hartley was teaming in our vicinity last week. He has recently purchased the N.W. Haught farm where he has been living. Miss Ruby Celland, teacher of the primary room of our school, gave holidays from Tuesday evening of last week till the first of this week and visited home folks near Elizabeth. Hickman - Conley Mr. Spencer Hickman, son of Wm. Hickman of Palestine, and Miss Inez Conley, who for the past few months has been working at-the Kanawha Hotel, were united in marriage at Palestine Tuesday, December 28, 1920, by Rev. O.E. Thorn. The Journal extends congratulations. Notice To all members American league and ex-soldiers of Wirt County there will be an assembly at the courthouse New Year's eve at 7:30 p.m. Music, speaking, refreshments and a good time expected. September 26, 1958 Band Boosters Have $9 Balance It was revealed at a Sept. 11 reorganizational meeting of the local band boosters club that there is a balance of $9.83 in the treasury as a new school term opens. Ray Whited, president, conducted the meeting, and in making the treasurer's report, Charles H. Bumgarner reported that a total of $930.60 had been taken in during the past school year and $920.77 had been paid out, leaving the $9.83 balance. A main item of business was the election of officers, at which Mr. Whited, was re-elected president. Other elected were: Florence Cline, vice president; Dolores Wilson, secretary; Juanita Epling, assistant secretary and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bumgarner, treasurers. Local and Personal Events of Interest Young Roger Roberts, with his wife and son, have been visiting the past several days with her people of Martinsburg, W.Va. The George Paul Roberts family, and Mrs. Blanche Garrard, City, are making plans to leave in the near future for their winter home at Anna Maria, Fla. Mr. and Mrs. Jasper Dulin and Bob Snider, City, left last Friday night after the Walton ballgame, for a visit until Sunday at Piney River, Va., with Mr. Dulin's sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas J. Mays, and daughter, Elizabeth Ann. County Agent Ira Kimble, wife and three daughters moved a few days ago from the J.F. Smith property (former Sam Davis residence), Pike St., to the Paul Higgins property on Washington, occupied until several weeks ago by the Harvey Beall family. Mrs. Diana Caltrider, Franklin St., City, is improved after a critical illness of early September. A daughter, Mrs. Gracie Arnold, of Manfield, O., was here for a week and a half this month, and here last weekend to visit her and other relatives were Willis Arnold, Mrs. Virginia Erwin and daughter, Patty, also of Mansfield. Mrs. Ida Amos, Parkersburg, has been up to see her mother quite frequently, along with others from here and distant points. Record Day Sept. 16 At Wirt Cannery Wirt County Community Cannery had its record day for the season Tuesday of last week, Sept. 16, when a total of 1, 173 cans were processed, Mrs. Zelda Dulin, instructor, reports. In fact, that record beats any one day since season before last, she said.
