Wirt County Journal May 12, 1999 Remember When ... * From the Wirt County Journal files October 8, 1920 If Harding Is Elected, Germany Wins (A front page story) Germany LOST the war, but if Harding is elected president and "straps the League of Nations covenant," Germany will WIN the peace. Losing the war means nothing to Germany, now, for that chapter is closed - the military issue between her and the allies was determined two years ago. But winning the peace means EVERYTHING to Germany - that is a matter of the present and the future. The Treaty of Peace which President Wilson signed at Paris and which was rejected by the Republican Senate was designed to make Germany play to the limit for her assault on civilization... .... It is the boast of the Harding managers that the majority of women voters are going to vote for Harding because they are opposed to the League of Nations. "We have 'told' the women of America the idea that the League of Nations means war; that it means that their sons will again be sent to the battlefields of Europe," is one way the Harding Get-the-Money boys express it.... .... If the women can be fooled into voting for Harding it will mean that they approve of his monstrous proposition to sue for a separate peace with Germany. Editor, Journal We are now at the eve of one of the most important elections since the formation of our government. Our voting population will this year be almost double what it has been before, due to the franchise of the women. This, of course, necessitates greater expense in the way of holding the election, but we venture the assertion that the women will vote right, and their vote will not be for sale like many men. Public Sale I will offer for sale at public auction at my residence in Tucker District, Wirt County, Thursday, October 14, 1920, the following described personal property to-wit: one roan horse six years old, general purpose; one gray mare, five years old; one fresh cow, five years old; four good yearling cattle; one sow with pigs at her side; one hog; one road wagon; one mowing machine; 20 head of sheep, good cuts; one hay rake.
