Wirt County Journal September 1, 1999 Remember When ... * from the Wirt County Journal files March 22, 1921 Inauguration of President Harding Simplicity Prevails at Ceremony - Cheers Resound Along Line of March Western Newspaper Union News Service Washington - The inauguration of Warren Harding of Ohio as the 29th president of the United States was marked with simplicity. The absence of pomp and ceremony of former inaugurals served to make the occasion more solemn and inspiring. Never has an inaugural address of a president been heard with such deep consideration. Although punctuated frequently with generous applause, there was no time when either the speaker or his audience were distracted from the main business of the hour. The use of a sound amplifier that carried President Harding's words to the extreme outskirts of the tremendous throng assembled in the Capitol plaza undoubtedly contributed to this attitude on the part of his auditors. But there was no mistaking the fact that the thousands were gathered with more than a mere desire to witness a historic event.
