Wirt County Journal September 4, 2002 Remember When . . . * From the pages of the Journal October 2, 1925 Local and Personal Miss Okel Dawson, who underwent an operation for appendicitis recently was brought home last week and is getting along nicely. Homer Weaver, who has been on the sick list, at the home of his mother, Mrs. Mollie Weaver, in Parkersburg, is improving slowly. Ed Yeager, progressive farmer of Route 4 was a progressive visitor in town on Saturday. T.W. Elliott, driller of the Hartley Oil Field; was a pleasant caller at the Journal Office on last Saturday while in town on business. Roy Righter of Sanoma, was a visitor in town the latter part of last week. Mrs. Ida Woodring presented the local graded school several volumes of valuable school books for the library. She recently returned from a business trip to Parkersburg. Miss Pearl Wilson teacher of the Two Runs School, Reedy District, was a visitor in town on last Saturday. C.B. Wiseman, progressive merchant and farmer of Right Reedy, was a business visitor in town on Monday evening. He is closing out his stock of goods at cost, going to quit the business. Mrs. Elizabeth Harkness will return to her winter home in Florida in a few days. Mr. and Mrs. William Cline and baby, Juanita, left Sunday for a several days visit with relatives in Wyoming County. Mrs. Roy Sheppard and children of Evanston Ill., arrived Sunday evening on a few days visit to her father, W.T. Roberts and other relatives in the county. Sept. 6, 1962 State Superintendent Discusses Pupil Starting Age Requirements There has been some interest in Wirt County this year to the starting age requirements for school pupils, although not many youngsters of their families have been affected. To give information for these cases and for future years, if it remains effective, we would like to present here information from a memorandum form State Superintendent Rex M. Smith. Until recently, a child entering school for the first time had to be six years old prior to Nov. 1 the year he started. Erecting Steel For Thorn Store Creating a lot of interest this week in mid-town Elizabeth is the erection of steel for the new I.P. Thorn & Son Store, adjacent to the Post Office. Contractor for the project is Chuck Nuzum of Parkersburg. The concrete slab foundation for the 40x80 ft building was poured three weeks ago. Steel from the Rig & Reel Co. arrived Tuesday of this week and erection of the heavy steel beams was done on Wednesday. Cannery To Be Closed Until Butchering Time The Wirt County Cannery, operated by Mrs. Faustine Huffman, which has operated the past several weeks on a one day a week schedule, is now closed. Advance announcement will be made later this fall on the butchering season schedule.
