Wirt County Journal December 22, 1999 Remember When ... * From the Wirt County Journal Files July 22, 1921 Ball Games On Thursday evening of last week the Parkersburg Kiwanis Club's ball team came to Elizabeth and played the local team. The game was close and closely contested from beginning to end and resulted in a score of 2 to 0 in favor of Elizabeth. Batteries for Elizabeth Gabbert and C. Millers, Parkersburg Greenwall, Shafer, and Halter. Struck out by Gabbert 19, Greenwall 3 and Shafer 3. Double plays Elizabeth 2. On Saturday afternoon the fast Williamstown team came here strengthened by some Marietta players for a game with the locals. A good game followed which resulted in a score of 6 to 1 in favor of Elizabeth. Batteries for Elizabeth Gabbert and C. Townsend, for Williamstown Casto and Stewart. Struck out by Gabbert 13, walked 3, struck out by Casto 1, walked 1. Hits of Gabbert 5, Casto 13. The Williamstown boys were a fine bunch and piloted by R.C. Coe, a former Wirt County boy, and Rev. Arch McQueen of the Williamstown Baptist Church. Eddie Gabbert, the local pitcher, now has a total of 176 strike outs to his credit for this year, more perhaps in proportion to the number of games played than any pitcher in this section of the state. March 13, 1959 Sharon Coe Wins Local 4-H Contest Miss Sharon Coe, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Coe, City, is announced as winner in the 4-H Information Contest, which the Junior Earnest Workers 4-H Club sponsored among their members. The highest scores were: Miss Coe, 100; Mike Bumgarner, 99; Tommy Cox, 98; Leslie Smith, 96-3/5; Loretta Channell, 95-1/2-, and Francie Wilson, 93. Bailey, Bruce Get L-K Cage 'Mention' Announcement is made of the 1959 All L-K Conference basketball team selections. Two Wirt players, Buddy Bailey and Duane Bruce, were among the list of players given "Honorary Mention." Popular W.C.H.S. Principal Sam Williams was re-elected president of the L-K Athletic Conference at a business meeting Monday night. Local and Personal Events of Interest Mrs. Olive H. Smith, with her father, E.B. (Ted) Hayes, and nephew, Curtis Ray Hayes, of Rand, W.Va., spent last weekend visiting local relatives, the G.C. Hayes family and Mr. and Mrs. R. F. Dailey. Curtis Ray is a junior student at DuPont High School. Ted remains quite well this winter and Olive continues her duties on the office staff of the State Tax Commissioner in Charleston. She visited her daughter, Carolyn Kay Smith, a sophomore at Potomac State College, Keyser, W.Va., weekend before last. Mrs. C.R. (Ethel) Pettit, City, was taken to the Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg, critically ill early Sunday morning where, she remains a patient. Her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Conant, and children, Akron, O., were here at the time having come because of the illness of Floyd's father, N.G. Conant of the Garfield Road. Mrs. Pettit's other daughter is Mrs. Joe Lett, City. Mrs. Pettit is in Room 205 at the hospital. Visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Wells and family last Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Wells and children of Washington, W.Va., and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Smith and girls. Ruby Evans, who makes her home with her mother, Mrs. Emma Thomas, City, has been quite ill with the pleurisy for the past several days. It is reported that William Gates, who resides in a trailer residence by the agricultural office, City, has been critically ill for the past several days. Jim Eddy, Rt. 4, City, was a visitor in town last Friday. He said his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Raymond Eddy, Morristown, Tenn., is now at her home there, continuing a slow recovery from her injuries received in an auto wreck the day before Christmas. She is now able to do part of her housework, but recovery from the bad chest and pelvis injuries have been very slow. Miss Donna Chambers, our high school news writer, has been sick with a cold this week. No news.
