FROM THE PAGES OF THE JOURNAL November 6, 1925 Local and Personal Mrs. Mae Coe has bought the Harley Robinson property on Washington St. of Walter Hoffman. W.E. Monroe of the good boat, Paul S., and son Ralph of near Rock Run stopped off Saturday morning for a short time on their way up river with a cargo of freight. Supt. C H. Snodgrass left last Friday on a trip to Charleston and Huntington. After looking about matters of business and attending the West Virginia Vs W.J. football game at Charleston on Saturday, he went to Huntington where he is attending the Educational Association this week. Assessor M.L. Hickman was called to Marietta the latter part of last week on account of the death of a relative. He returned the first of this week. H.T. Martin, good farmer and citizen of Upper Two Ripple, was a business visitor here on Saturday. H.S. Copen, good farmer and citizen of Rt. 4, was shopping in town on Saturday of this week. Amos Cox, good farmer and citizen of Standing Stone, was shopping in town on Saturday afternoon. Mrs. J.M. Bell of Deevers Fork, moved the latter part of last week to the Robert's property on Pike Street for the benefit of the local schools for her children. Overton B. Thorne writes us to send his Journal to Florida. Miss Ora Casto, daughter of Dr. L.B. Casto, was taken to the hospital at Parkersburg on Tuesday evening where she underwent an operation for appendicitis' at ten o'clock that night. She rallied from the anesthetic and at latest reports was doing very nicely. Walter Roberts, progressive merchant and citizen of Cherry, was a business visitor in town on Tuesday. T.M. Townsend is erecting a new business building on Court Street. It is reported that it will be used as a meat market. October 11, 1962 Outbreak of Blackleg Is Considered 'Serious' Wirt County has had three areas this summer in which there has been outbreaks of blackleg in cattle. Farmers have lost cattle which could have been prevented if proper steps would have been taken earlier. Blackleg in cattle is found in all parts of the United States. The soil can become heavily infested with blackleg. Spring and fall are seasons most favorable for the development of blackleg. It is advisable to vaccinate in the spring to protect young calves and then give the second shot in the fall. Native Wirt Countian Loses Life in Fire Mrs. Mae Chaffey, a native Wirt Countian, lost her life in a fire in her California home on Saturday night, Sept, 29th. Mrs. Chaffey was born in Wirt County and was the daughter of Anna Woodyard Rawson and T.F. Rawson. She was the widow of Frederick B. Chaffey and had lived in California since 1921. Plan Route 14 Improvement Soon Bids will be open soon on a State Road Commission purchase order for resurfacing and improving drainage on 4.1 miles of WV Route 14 in Wirt County. The Rt. 14 project will begin two mile north of the routes's junction with secondary Route 14/15, south of Two Run and end at the Wirt-Roane County line South of Lucile. Ruby Stanley is Walnut Festival Princess Representing Wirt County at the 8th Annual West Virginia Black Walnut Festival in Spencer the rest of this week is Miss Ruby Stanley, daughter of Raymond Stanley. The local princess is a senior at WCHS and active in school affairs. She will be on hand for the Festival Coronation of the Queen on Friday night.
