Wirt County Journal October 16, 2002 Obituary Omar 'Vandy' Vandergrift Omar L. "Vandy" Vandergrift, 76, of Parkersburg, died Oct. 8, 2002, at Camden-Clark Hospital In Parkersburg. He was born in Wood County, the son of the late Henry B. and Alta Hill Vandergrift. He had retired from Allegheny Freight and was a member of the Teamsters Union Local 84. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a lifetime member of Parkersburg's VFW Post 1212. He is survived by his wife, Betty Lou Robinson Deem Vandergrift of Parkersburg; son, Michael Vandergrift and wife, Debara of Parkersburg; daughter, Resi Carpenter and her husband, James of Parkersburg; stepchildren, Raymond Pickens and his wife Shirley of Virginia Beach, Kathaleen Boling and her husband, Rob of Myrtle Beach, Dennis Deem and his wife, Rhonda of Elizabeth and Darren Deem of Myrtle Beach; 22 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Violet Pritchard Vandergrift; a stepson, Robert Pickens; a stepdaughter, Barbara Archer; and seven brothers. Services were held Friday, Oct. 11, at 11 a.m. at Leavitt Funeral Home with the Rev. Norman Butler officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memory Gardens with full Military rites by American Legion Post 15.
