Wirt County Journal October 2, 2002 Remember When... October 30, 1925 Local and Personal P.T.L. Depue, prominent citizen of Creston was a business visitor in Elizabeth on Friday night of last week. L.W. Dennis, progressive farmer and merchant of Flint Run was a business visitor in town on Saturday. Mrs. Ida Woodring left the latter part of last week for Akron, Ohio to spend the winter with her daughters. J.J. Baker of Parkersburg was a visitor here on Sunday night and Monday. L.C. Underwood, progressive citizen of the Hartley section was a visitor in town on Friday evening and took his daughters, Misses Rita and Juanita, who are attending the local high school, home with him for the week end. F.F. Daniell, county surveyor, was a business visitor in town on Tuesday. L.L. Mace, good farmer and citizen of Rt 3, was a business visitor here on Tuesday. Draper Sheppard, big farm and stockman of Right Reedy, transacted business in town the first of this week. A.P. Twyman, of Island Run, has bought L.W. Dennis's store. He was at Parkersburg on Tuesday of this week buying a new stock of goods. A new piece of pavement has been laid this week on Washington Street from Court Street to the Raleigh Hotel. T.A. Brookins of Loraine, Ohio, who left his wife and three small children at rooms in the W.O. Davis residence returned this week for them. He had planned to locate in Florida, but stopped at Ford Valley, GA. where he built a home and will make their future home. On his return at Cincinnati he was robbed of over $100 in cash. October 4, 1962 Four Get Local Prizes for Baking In the adult division of the L-K Black Walnut local baking contest, held last Saturday, 1st prize went to Mrs. Morton Frey; 2nd place to Mrs. Earl Kidder and 3rd place went to Mrs. Carl D. Bennett. There was only one entry in the junior division, cookies, so Miss Kay Frey received 1st prize. Judges were Sheriff Ira Lockhart, County Agent Ira Kimble, Home Ec teacher, Mrs. Martha Smith and homemaker Mrs. Genevieve Sheppard. Deputy Clerk Injured in Fall Miss Leila Ingram, Deputy Wirt County Clerk, was injured in a fall down the basement steps at her home Tuesday evening and is a patient in Camden Clark Hospital suffering from a splintered pelvic bone. Doctors have diagnosed that it will take some time to heal but no surgery will be required. A substitute will be in place until she returns. Meet at Creston About Japanese Beetle Control Ira V. Kimble, county agent, has announced that there will be a meeting on the control of Japanese beetles at the Creston School next Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Officials of the State Department will be present to discuss the distribution of the milky spore in the community. The milky spore is a parasite that lives on the Japanese beetle grub. Once it becomes established it will kill the Japanese beetle grub and will reduce the number of Japanese beetles. Bennetts To Fly To Europe Friday Mrs. Helen M. Bennett of Parkersburg and Newark, and her daughter, Miss Loretta Bennett, left Parkersburg Tuesday night for Washington, D.C. They will leave Friday morning for Europe. Mrs. Bennett will join her daughter on Oct. 27, when her daughter will become the bride of Warner Weber, who is in the U.S. Army.
