Wirt County Journal September 11, 2002 Remember When . . . * From the pages of the Journal October 9, 1925 Local and Personal Mrs. Dora Evans, Mrs. Walter Hoffman, Miss Mary Woodyard and Miss Catherine Hoffman were Parkersburg visitors on Tuesday morning. Mr. Henry Woodyard of Paris ILL. is expected Friday to visit Mrs. J.A. Wiseman and other relatives. Rev. A.F. Monroe filled his regular appointment at Central Hill Church at 2:30 p.m. last Sunday. After preaching services they were dismissed to meet at the water's edge where Mrs. Jennings and her son Fred were baptized. W.H. Thompson one of Burning Springs good citizens, was a visitor here on Saturday evening. Charles Bailey and son of Standing Stone were shopping in town on Saturday evening. Dr. H.C. Trout of Parkersburg, was a visitor in Elizabeth on Saturday. K.K. Deevers, of Rt. 4, visited friends and relatives in Parkersburg over Sunday. G.C. Eagle of Burning Springs has moved to the Pomroy farm opposite Dulin. Miss Aguess Sims, principal of the Leachtown School, visited her brother C.A. Sims here Saturday and Sunday. Mrs. W.C. Bassnett of Lock 5, underwent an operation for appendicitis last Saturday morning at the Camden-Clark Hospital. She is getting along as well as could be expected. Miss Thelma spent Sunday with her at Parkersburg. Miss Neil Hall spent the week end with relatives in Parkersburg. Sept. 13, 1962 Wirt School Enrollment Drops Slightly Total school enrollment in Wirt County for the current term is 20 less than the close of last term, according to preliminary figures received in the office of the School Superintendent, Mrs. Russell Thorne, one of the secretaries told the Journal this week. Figures show there are 1,048 enrolled in all schools this month as compared with 1,068 at the close of the 1961-62 term last spring. Tom Quick on Leave Sp. 4 Tom Quick of the U.S. Army is home until the 21st of September, visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Quick and other area relatives. He has been on duty with the 611th Transpt Co., Ft. Riley, Kan., and is scheduled to go over seas soon. Kills Copperhead Mrs. Lester Ferrell of Munday killed a 28-inch copperhead snake on the farm on Henry Run, Sept. 4. She saw the chickens excitedly squawking out by the building, went to investigate, and saw the snake. She tried to kill it with a rock, but it got under the building. The same evening the dog barked at it going up on the hill and she got a .22 rifle and shot it three times then beat it with a rake.
