Wirt County Journal September 18, 2002 Remember When ... FROM THE PAGES OF THE JOURNAL October 16, 1925 Local and Personal Mrs. O.W. Coplin, who has been in the hospital at Parkersburg for several days is improving slowly. Mrs. Joseph Gray has been very poorly for several days with typhoid fever. E.H. Miller, progressive teacher and farmer of Somerville Fork, was a pleasant caller at the Journal Office on last Saturday while in town on business. Mr. and Mrs. E.M. Wilson were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Jas Petti and family on Rt. 4 on Sunday. Mr. Hamric, a road worker has moved his family to the E.M. Wilson property near the Baptist Church so as to have advantage of the local schools for his children. J.N. Wolverton returned last week from a business trip to Clarksburg and vicinity. He reported business conditions very slow in that section. The Journal editor can now have pumpkin pie, Addam Knupp, good farmer and citizen of Tucker Creek, on last Saturday, presented us with, we believe, about the largest pumpkin in the county. Virgil Ingram, who holds a good position at Uniontown, PA., spent last week visiting home folks on Tucker Creek. Overton B. Thorne, of Palestine, who has been employed in Kentucky is home for a short visit before going to St. Petersburg, FL. He is going for the same company he has been employed with for the past several months. G.H. Lockhart left on Tuesday morning for Tampa, FL., where he will take up the practice of law. Henry Woodyard of Hill Farm, ILL., is visiting relatives here for several days. Born to Mr. and Mrs. Rolla Coplin on Tuesday, Oct. 13th, a boy. W.M. Pomroy and M.L. Hickman, left Monday night for Fairmont to attend the Odd Fellows, Grand Lodge which is in session there this week. Mr. Pomroy represents the local I.O.O.F. Lodge and Mr. Hickman the Creston Lodge. At a special meeting of the town council on Tuesday, night the Cox, Clinton Construction Co. was given the contract for paving Washington St., from the Roberts corner to the Raleagh Hotel. G.W. Roberts is making a valued improvement to his corner property in the way of concrete front walks connecting with the pavement. Sept. 20, 1962 Twymans Had Guests From California Mr. and Mrs. Henry Twyman, Rt. 2, had as recent guests over Labor Day weekend, Mr. and Mrs. Farmer Boyd of Concord, CA. The Boyds are friends of Mrs. Twyman's family. She was the former Lorraine Alma Post, and her father the late Andrew Post of California. Mrs. Twyman a native of Fruitville, CA., hasn't been back there for 30 years and she was especially delighted by the recent visit of her friends. Doug Mills Honored On Sixth Birthday On Thursday, Sept. 13, Doug Mills and guests enjoyed a party and picnic supper on the lawn of his home on Washington St. Games were played and a balloon blowing contest was held, prizes were given for each game. Happy birthday was sung by the guests, Sara Roberts, Charlotte Roberts, Jeff George, Pat McCue, Ronda Kimble, Kathy Kemp, Jimmy Rader and Lugene Hancock, after which a picnic supper was served. Other guests included Mr. and Mrs. James Roberts, Mr. and Mrs. Warren Mills and Mr. and Mrs. Jerald Mills, parents of the honoree. Son Born to Belts Born to Mr. and Mrs. David Belt (Reba Kidder), on Friday, Sept. 14, 1962, an 8 pound 15 ounce baby boy named Charles Michael. They have two other children, Melody Dawn and David Kevin. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Earl Kidder and Mr. and Mrs. Luther Belt all of Elizabeth. Hancock is Quitting Chevrolet; County Without Automotive Agency Randel Hancock is this week in the process of closing down his Elizabeth Chevrolet agency which he has operated since Jan. 1961, under the name of Hancock, Motors. Insufficient operating capital, along with one recent sizeable business loss is cited as the reason for discontinuance of business. Hancock plans to retain his residence here, however and expects to open a used car business in Palestine probably next month.
