Wirt County Journal December 1, 1999 Obituaries Donald Anderson Donald Glenn "Andy" Anderson, 70, of Belleville, died Nov. 20 at the Cleveland Clinic. He was born in Roane County, a son of the late Willard R. and Mildred F. Parsons Anderson. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and was retired from Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical, where he was employed for 30 1/2 years. He was a member of Milhoan Baptist Church. He is survived by his. wife, Mary Emma Anderson; four daughters, Sherry Lynn Copeland of Elizabeth, Elizabeth A. McNemar of Parkersburg, Mary Frances Graves of Houston, Texas, and Paula Jeanne Moore of Mineral Wells; one son, Richard Alan Anderson of Pasadena, Texas; four sisters, Betty Wagner Miller of Devola, Rita Jo Timko of Beverly, Karen K. Frame of Little Hocking and Barbara I. Best of Belpre; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one infant brother, John E. Anderson; one granddaughter; and one great-grandson. Services were held Nov. 23 at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home, Chapel of Remembrance, with Pastor Tim Underwood and the Rev. Darrell Johnson officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memory Gardens, Garden of Prayer. Sylvia V. Curtis Sylvia V. Curtis, 80, of 52712 Ohio Rt. 68, Reedsville, died Nov. 22 at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg. She was born Sept. 3, 1919, in Rockport, a daughter of the late Aaron Davis and Maude Mae Dorst Seals. She was a homemaker and a member of the White's Chapel Church and RSVP Senior Citizens of Pomeroy. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Paul and Shelia Curtis of Pomeroy and Charles and Elizabeth Curtis of Springboro, Ohio; two daughters, Virginia Reynolds of Parkersburg and Sandra McDonald of Reedsville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Doug Bissell of Tuppers Plains and Marilyn and Albert Pooler of Miamisburg, Ohio; one foster son, David Seals of Dayton; two sisters, Vera Thompson of Elizabeth and Helen Beck of Kent, Ohio; one brother, Eugene Seals of Ric hfield, N.C.; 18 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Marjorie Brewer of Reedsville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Perry Curtis; and one grandson, Terry Lee Curtis. Services were held Nov. 27 at White-Moquin Funeral Home, Coolville, with the Rev. Phillip Ridenhour officiating. Burial was in Sandhill Cemetery, Long Bottom, Ohio. Norman DeWees Norman D. DeWees, 78, of Parkersburg, formerly of East Lawn Ave., died Nov. 24 at his home. He was born in Munday, a son of the late Lloyd and Beulah DeWees. He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He was a member of the Postal Workers Union, Woodmen of the World, Masonic Lodge and the Seventh Street United Methodist Church. He sang in the Mountaineer Gospel Quartet for 25 years. He is survived by one daughter Judy Joseph of Parkersburg; two sons, Duane DeWees of Parkersburg and Dwight DeWees of Glenville; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister, Mauree Holbert of Elizabeth. He was preceded in death by his wife, N. Maxine Bell DeWees, in 1997; and one brother, Leroy DeWees. Services were held Nov. 29 at Vaughan Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with the Rev. Norman Butler officiating. Burial was in Evergreen North Cemetery. Elden Givens Elden Givens, 76, of Rocky Mount, Va., formerly of Bridgeport, died Nov. 4 at Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital, Rocky Mount. He was born Feb. 15, 1923, in Elizabeth, a son of the late Rev. O. J. and Leota Myrtle Morehead Givens. He attended school in Jarvisville and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a longtime employee of Fisher Foundry, Hutchinson, and Kyle and Co., Clarksburg. He was a member and deacon of Evangel Baptist Church, Bridgeport, and the local carpenters union. He enjoyed donating his time to various church projects. He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, James and Cheryl Givens of Virginia, Minn.; one daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and John Howell of Rocky Mount; one grandson, Kevin Givens of Roanoke; three sisters and brother-in-law, Dale Givens and Virginia Bernard of Bridgeport and Mary Alice and Ernest Cox of Salem; one brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Yvonne Givens of Salem; an aunt, Dorcas Turner of Palestine; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife in 1990, Virginia Vernon, whom he married October 1943; one daughter, Peggy; and one brother, Thurman. Mabel W. Harrison Mabel W. Harrison of Parkview Heath Care Center, formerly of Elizabeth, died Nov. 19 at the center. She is survived by two nieces, Jodelle Deem of Lexington, Ky., and Betty Garvin of Cincinnati; and one nephew, Kenneth Deem of Washington. She was preceded in death by her parents, T. W. and Francis Copen Mason; her husband, Frank J. Harrison; two sisters; and four brothers. Private services were held Nov. 20. Arrangements were handled by Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg. Dorothy Holbert Dorothy V. Holbert, 76, of Rt. 3, Sandyville, died Nov. 20 at ElderCare of Ripley. She was born August 9, 1923, in Wirt County, a daughter of the late William Luther and Evaline Barton Wigal. She was a lifelong Jackson County homemaker. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Charles Holbert; six sons, C. Rodney Holbert of Elizabeth, Francis Holbert, E. Leon Holbert, H. Wayne Holbert and James Holbert, all of Sandyville, and Ralph Holbert of Mineral Wells; four daughters, Bonnie Trickett of Sandyville, Ellen Lockhart and Barbara Hunt, both of Parkersburg, and Peggy Sims of Leroy; two sisters, Sylvia Atkinson of Big Bend and Jo DeVaughn of Sandyville; 19 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by six brothers, Charles Wigal, Lawrence Wigal, Harley Wigal, Arley Wigal, Glen Wigal and Elvin Wigal; and one sister, Ruby DeVaughn. Services were held Nov. 23 at Busch Funeral Home, Elizabeth, with the Revs. Jerry Eaton and Paul Palmer officiating. Burial was in Limestone Cemetery, Rockport. 'Tess' Furr Huron Theresa "Tess" Furr Huron, 81, of Washington St., Elizabeth, died Nov. 20 at St. Joseph's Hospital, Parkersburg. She was born May 22, 1918, in London, England, a daughter of the late Patrick and Lillian Webb Crummie. She was a professional entertainer and singer, having performed on stages throughout the United States and Europe for more than 35 years. She was a member of the Woman's Club of Elizabeth and served as a volunteer reader at Wirt County Primary Center. She was a member of St. Elizabeth Roman Catholic Church and was an avid musician and reader. She is survived by her husband, Leroy J. Huron; two daughters, Carolyn Snider of Elizabeth and Nicola Messer of Orono, Canada; one grandson, Nicholas Snider of Elizabeth; and one granddaughter, Sarah Messer of Orono, Canada. She was preceded in death by one brother, Ron Crummie; and one infant sister. Mass of Christian burial with funeral liturgy was held Nov. 22 at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Elizabeth, with the Rev. Donald Tranel officiating. Burial will follow at convenience of the family. Arrangements were entrusted to the Busch Funeral Home of Elizabeth. Jewell, 95, formerly of Belleville, died Nov. 22 at the residence of her granddaughter, Elizabeth McNemar, with whom she resided. She was born in Cincinnati, Ark., a daughter of the late J. Henry and Mary Ellen Neal Johnston. She had been a Methodist since 1937 and began attending Wayside United Methodist Church in 1980. Since 1984, she attended Milhoan Ridge Baptist Church. She taught school from 1922-1927 and worked for Air Force Finance Department in Denver, Colo., from 1952-1956. She was a life member of Eastern Star 128 in Englewood, Colo., Ammerance Bahannii Court 244 and White Shrine of Jerusalem 5 in Mesa, Ariz., and Daughter of the Nile 35 Quedesh Temple, Phoenix, Ariz. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Emma Anderson of Belleville; five grandchildren, Richard Anderson of Houston, Texas, Sherry L. Copeland of Elizabeth, Elizabeth McNemar of Cedar Grove, Frances Graves of Houston and Paula Moore of Mineral Wells; nine great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard B. Jewell; one infant daughter; one infant great-grandchild; one infant great-great-grandchild; two brothers; and one sister. Services were held Non. 26 at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with the Rev. Paul Morrison officiating. Burial was in Mountain View Memorial Gardens, Mesa. Dinah Coplin Law Dinah Coplin Law, 53, formerly of Elizabeth, died Nov. 24 in Wheeling. She was born in Parkersburg, a daughter of the late Dr. Robert W. and Mildred "Mim" Pettit Coplin. She was a 1964 graduate of Wirt County High School and a member of the Elizabeth Baptist Church. She had been employed as a beautician in the Parkersburg area for several years. She is survived by two brothers, Jay W. Coplin of Charleston and Richard W. Coplin of Elizabeth; and one aunt, Nelle Coplin of Elizabeth. Services were held Nov. 27 at Busch Funeral Home, Elizabeth, with Evangelist Eugene L. Conger officiating. Burial was in K of P Cemetery, Elizabeth.
