Wirt County Journal November 24, 1999 Obituaries Johnnie Criss Johnnie Criss, 90, of Elizabeth, died Nov. 17 at Parkersburg. He was born in Creston, a son of the late James and Minnie Criss. He attended the churches of Wirt County and was a farmer. He is survived by two daughters, Edna Ward of Palestine and Mary Pauline Patterson of Marietta; six grandchildren, John Longfellow of Walker, Wayne Longfellow of Sandyville, Mary Somerville, of Elizabeth, Roger Longfellow of Elizabeth, Brenda Surratt of Cleveland, Ohio, and Christopher Patterson of New York; six great-grandchildren, Mary Francis, Chelsea, Bobbie Jean, Lori, Kevin and Angela; one great-grandson, Justin; and three sisters, Mabel Parks of Elizabeth, Francis Somerville of Parkersburg and Hazel Woodring of South Carolina. He was preceded in death by his wife, Clara Hall Criss, May 18, 1995; one son; one brother; and three sisters. Services were Nov. 20 at Matheny Pomroy Funeral Home, Elizabeth, with the Revs. Gladson Grim and Ray Whiteman officiating. Burial was in Hill Grove Cemetery. Jack Haverty Jack Haverty, 80, of Munday, died Nov. 16 at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg. He was born at Annamoriah, a son of the late Albert and Flora Basnett Haverty. He attended Belpre Public Schools and was a former member of Mount Moriah Church at Annamoriah. He was a mechanic and operator of large construction equipment. He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers of Local 18 AFL-CIO of Parkersburg. He was a member of the U.S. Army during World War II and was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. He is survived by one stepson, Donald V. Wilson and family of West Virginia; and several nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Sprague Haverty; and three brothers. Services were held Nov. 19 at Tatman Funeral Home, Belpre, with the Rev. Bud Combs officiating. Burial was in Rockland Cemetery, Belpre. Prudence Ortscheid Prudence Olive "Granny" Ortscheid, 98, died Nov. 12 in Akron, Ohio. She was born May 14, 1901, to Jacob and Martha Jane Douglas of Calhoun County. She is survived by five sons, Bill, Marvin, Robert, Harlon and Harold, all of Ohio; two daughters, Mary Ice of Ohio and Ola Parsons of Elizabeth; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry, in 1967; one son, Forrest Newton Ortscheid; and one daughter Laura Parson. Graveside services were held Nov. 15 at Lockwood Cemetery, Akron, Ohio.
