Wirt County Journal November 24, 1999 Remember When ... * From the Wirt County Journal Files June 17, 1921 Lucille Items The fifth Sunday meeting at Two Runs church passed off pleasantly and a big dinner was served on the grounds. Several of our old citizens were here from Elizabeth, O. J. Daniell, C. A. Daniell and family and Leonard Dailey. A. B. Huffman has purchased the Reedy garage. F. H. Morehead is in Parkersburg this week buying goods for his store. David and Burley Board, son of L. Board formerly of Lucille now of Hartford, W.Va., were visiting relatives here this week. F. F. Daniell is building a new house. The remains of Walter Trickett who died in France, from wounds received in action, were brought home the latter part of last week. The funeral was held from the Two Runs Baptist Church on Sunday afternoon. A very large crowd was in attendance. Many soldier boys from Parkersburg and other sections of the state paid their respect to their departed comrade. The remains were laid to rest in the Two Runs Cemetery. Birthday dinner S. F. Wells entertained Squire J. N. Boice of Route 3 at a special dinner in his honor on Tuesday, June 7, that being Mr. Boice's 65 birthday. Mr. Boice was here serving on the grand jury and says he is enjoying very good health for a man of his age. Local & Personal Mrs. Harrison Gray of Route 4 was a visitor here on Tuesday. O. R. King, one of Tucker District's good citizens and progressive farmers, was a visitor in Elizabeth on Tuesday. W. R. Cox of Hartley was here the first of the week. He had been looking for work, but found nothing. Born to Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Roberts of Somers Street Saturday night a fine baby boy. Born to Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Clinton, of Vienna, former Wirt Countians, recently a girl. Mrs. Alice Reed of Palestine was the guest of Mrs. Anna Smith and granddaughter, Miss Georgia, on Monday night of this week. The Fairmont Creamery Company of Columbus, Ohio, pays the highest cash prices for cream. Careful tests and painstaking service. Mrs. Ollie McFee is visiting relatives at Hartley and left Straight Creek this week. Mrs. Channing Smith and baby Emerson visited her father, I. P. Thorn, and family over Sunday. Mr. Smith has rented the John Keys farm at Newark and expects to move there soon. The Democratic population of Palestine increases. Born to Mr. and Mrs. T. P. Chenowent on Sunday a son. B. F. Gray was taken to the hospital at Parkersburg on Monday morning, having undergone much suffering since Saturday evening before. At latest reports he was resting better and is thought he will not have to undergo an operation. February 13, 1959 Goodwin Buys Roberts Station A business transfer of wide local interest was effected early this week when Linza and Mamie Roberts sold their Sunoco Service Station and lunch room to Dale C. Goodwin, who also operates a feed and grocery business nearby at Tucker Creek. Goodwin will operate the station business, with the aid of Rex Watson, Route 3, City; and Mrs. Ralph H. (Margaret) Smith has assumed operation of the lunch room. Goodwin took over Tuesday and Mrs. Smith Wednesday of this week. Mr. and Mrs. Roberts had conducted the business for almost a year there, after the site had been closed for a few years. Roberts is employed by Marbon Chemical Co., Washington, W.Va. Local and Personal Events of Interest Mr. and Mrs. A. R. (Bob) Davis of Munday, Mrs. Harold Kemp of Brohard and Mrs. Fred Busch of Macfarlan were Wednesday (Feb. 4) visitors in Elizabeth, and Bob stopped to renew his Journal subscription at that time. He has been in good health for quite some time now and is pumping wells for Harley Shimer. Harley McFee of Windy and Charlie Daugherty of Parkersburg were Elizabeth visitors on Wednesday of last week. Mr. Daugherty has been away from here for about 25 years. He formerly was a resident of the Right Reedy section and still owns his farm there. He said he retired two years ago from his employment at the American Viscose Co., and since has been active in looking after his rental real estate holdings. Mrs. R. H. Maser, City, has received word of the serious illness of her brother, Woodyard Byrd, of 1114 Eureka St., Lansing 12, Michigan. Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Gibson and pretty daughter, Nichola, who will be 9 years old Feb. 24, were visitors here with the Everett Gibsons Saturday before last. Edwin continues his duties as vocational agriculture instructor at Calhoun County High school. The Gibsons get down to visit local relatives occasionally. Guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Perry D. Williams, Rt. 4, City, last Sunday were their children, Mr. and Mrs. Paul G. Roberts and children, Ramona, 5, and Paul Jr., 3, of Mountain, W.Va., Bob Williams of Rt. 4, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Williams of Newark, and Mr. and Mrs. Pete Morrison of Freed. Perry is stronger now than he had been a few months ago, but he still has to remain very quiet because of a bad heart condition. Mrs. Lillian Hannah of Rt. 3, Palestine, is a medical patient at the Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital in Parkersburg.
