I received the following post quite some time ago from the Wirt Co. mailing list. I have some answers to these CRISS questions that were asked..... (the post): This is an article from the Wirt County Journal, September 2, 1998. SANDHILL CEMETERY has facelift If anyone has visited the Sandhill Cemetery on Courtney Ridge within the last month, they will notice some much-needed changes have been made. Many of the gravestones have sunk into the ground after years of standing and were in danger of falling over. Those stones have been lifted and reset and many of the graves have been filled in. Trees and brush have been cut. DeBarr Trucking donated a load of fill dirt and Niles Ashley donated time, labor and equipment to do the work. More improvements are planned as time permits. It is hoped to restore many of the stones legibility with the use of high pressure water cleaning. The graves still need to be reseeded and covered with straw. Some graves do not have markers. The names and dates are not legible on the first three CRISS graves. Also, no dates are legible for the Samual Springer grave. The last two graves in the cemetery are not marked. Any assistance would be appreciated. (My info) >From a very reliable source, I have received the following information: John CRISS unmarked grave Sand Hill Cemetery, Courtney Ridge-Funeral services Pomroy Funeral Home Rev. Kelcie Board officiating. b. 8-31-1872 d. 1-29-1940. Onna CRISS Sand Hill Cemetery. Wife of John CRISS, charge to Co. Court, Elizabeth, WV. Clergyman J.S. Sarver-certifying physician O.W. Coplin, Elizabeth, WV. b. March 5, 1889 d. May 12, 1935. Age 46 years 2 months 7 days. It did not list a Funeral Home for Onna. Other spellings that I have found on Onna are: Ona, Chessie Leonie, and Leona. Last names Nicholson, Nicholosn, Nicholas, Nicklaus, Nichols. I have additional information on the CRISS/NICHOLSON Families if anyone is interested. I live in CA, so it is difficult for me to do location research. If anyone is heading towards the Pomroy Funeral Home in the near future, please take a look for my people.... THANKS! Linda Criss [email protected]
