    1. Elizabeth Gazette consolidates - 1869

    3. I found this article on a microfilm copy of the newspaper and thought it was interesting. It gives a good tip to anyone doing Wirt County Newspaper research. ===== "The Weekly Times" Parkersburg, West Virginia Thursday Morning, January 21, 1869 NEWSPAPER CONSOLIDATION The Elizabeth Gazette heretofore printed and published at Wirt County House has been consolidated with the Parkersburg Daily and the West Virginia Weekly Times and the Weekly will hereafter be issued from the Times office under the title of the West Virginia Weekly Times and Wirt County Gazette. The addition of the large subscription list of the Gazette to our own list, which was greatly augmented during the late campaign, will make the West Vir- ginia Weekly Times one of the very best advertising mediums in the State. We do not purpose allowing but a limited number of advertise- ments to appear in its columns, how- ever, and hence for a short time at least, we will be obliged to issue a supplement. This is the more neces- sary as the Gazette closed its issue one week earlier that was anticipat- ed at the Times office and no provi- sion was made for supplying the Ga- zette subscribers with the Times for this week -- the outside of the Week- ly Times being partially distributed before the office of the Gazette ar- rived. The reason for this was that the steamer chartered to convey the materials to Parkersburg disappoint- ed Messrs. McWilliams and Scofield in consequence of a sudden fall in the water threatening to leave the steam- er weather bound up the river. On Saturday the appurtenances of the office came down safely on board the steamer Naomi, Capt. Caswell, Commander and this morning were removed to their place of destination in the Times office. It will necessarily require a few days time to set our house in order anew, but when once rearranged we will be better than ever prepared to give satisfaction to our patrons both old and new. The quantity of read- ing matter will be increased and a greater variety of type and an im- proved typography will be among the advantages derived from the con- solidation of the two offices. The readers of the Gazette will be fur- nished with a larger paper containing more reading matter and equally de- voted to the local interests of Wirt and neighboring Counties, while the paper will possess greater facilities for receiving prompt and reliable news from all parts of the country. Our daily as well as weekly sub- scribers will be further benefitted by the addition to our editorial corps of Messrs. McWilliams & Scofield who have succeeded in making of the Ga- zette a most interesting and lively paper, and who leave Elizabeth re- gretted by hosts of kind friends with whom they part in friendship. Mr. Scofield will continue to reside at Elizabeth, and will secure for the paper, by correspondence, & c., all that is likely to interest the people of Wirt county in a county organ.--- Mr. McWilliams is well known as a superior, practical printer, and the mechanical department of the Daily and Weekly Times, will after Tues- day's issue, be under his personal supervision and management. We cannot doubt that he will make his merit in the printing line visible in the improved appearance of the Times.
